The purest blue a vine can offer. Heavenly Blue is a legendary morning glory variety with large, funnel-shaped flowers in the color of an azure sky, with a white throat and a delicate yellow center. In a single season, the plant climbs 2.5–3 m and, from July until the first frosts, opens dozens of new flowers every morning. One packet of seeds is enough to cover an entire pergola.

What makes this variety stand out
Heavenly Blue was bred as early as the 1930s and remains unrivalled among annual blue climbers to this day. The flowers reach 8–10 cm in diameter, and their color is truly pure blue – without the purple tint typical of the common purple morning glory. Each flower lives for just one day: it opens at dawn and closes in the afternoon, but the plant produces so many that the vine remains continuously covered in flowers for three–four months.
Heart-shaped, light green leaves form a dense, even wall of greenery that is decorative in its own right and effectively conceals a fence mesh, post or unattractive fence. Morning glory grows quickly and requires no special care – all it needs is support and sun.
Growing step by step
Sowing (late April – early May, directly into the ground): the seeds have a hard coat, so it is worth soaking them in lukewarm water for 12–24 hours the day before sowing or gently scuffing them with a file. Sow directly in the permanent position, placing 2–3 seeds in spots 50–60 cm apart, at a depth of 1–1.5 cm. Seedlings emerge after about 2 weeks. Morning glory germinates when the soil reaches at least 15°C, so do not sow too early.
Thinning: when the seedlings reach 10 cm, leave the 1–2 strongest plants in each spot. For earlier sowing under cover in April, sow 2–3 seeds per pot in peat pots or pots 8–10 cm in diameter, as morning glory does not tolerate transplanting with disturbance to the root ball.
Planting out (after 15 May): plant out seedlings from pots after the risk of frost has passed, together with the root ball, spacing them 50–60 cm apart, directly beside a support – mesh, strings, trellis or a pergola post. The soil should be fertile, well-drained and not allowed to dry out; choose a sunny or lightly shaded position sheltered from the wind.
Care: guide the shoots onto the support during the first few weeks; afterward, the plant manages on its own. Water regularly during dry periods. Be careful with fertilizing: excess nitrogen produces masses of leaves and few flowers – a balanced fertilizer once every 3–4 weeks is sufficient, or none at all if the soil is fertile.
Uses
Heavenly Blue is a classic for covering arbors, pergolas, fences and mesh – in a single season, it creates a green wall dotted with blue trumpets. It also grows excellently on a balcony in a deep planter (min. 10 l) with a trellis or strings, while planted beside a post or dead tree, it transforms it into a flowering column. It combines well with nasturtiums and runner beans on a shared support. The flowers are eagerly visited by bumblebees and bees.
Gardener's tip
Morning glory flowers open in the morning and close during hot afternoons, so if you want to admire them after work, plant the vine on the eastern side or where it will receive light shade around lunchtime – the flowers will last longer then. Also remember that morning glory seeds are poisonous if ingested – keep the packet out of children's reach.
