Description

Leaves that smell of pineapple and tiny golden flowers like miniature pine cones. Cephalophora aromatica is an annual plant from South America, growing to about 50 cm tall. It has branching stems and finely divided leaves resembling fennel or chamomile, with a pineapple scent. In summer, small, yellow, spherical flower heads appear, resembling tiny pine cones or pineapple fruits. This undemanding curiosity is ideal for herb gardens, flower beds, and containers.

What makes this variety special

Its most remarkable feature is its fruity, sweet scent, reminiscent of ripe pineapple. The fragrance is released especially when the leaves are touched, so it is worth planting near a path, beside a bench, or in a pot by the entrance, where it can easily be brushed by hand.

Cephalophora is also exceptionally undemanding. It grows in any soil type, has modest water requirements, and thrives in a sunny position. Botanically, it belongs to the daisy family; in more recent classifications, it is sometimes placed in the genus Helenium (Helenium aromaticum). It is still a rare sight in Polish gardens.

Growing step by step

Sowing (March–April, under cover): Sow the seeds in light potting mix in pots or trays, covering them very thinly—to a depth equal to the size of the seed. Maintain a temperature of about 15°C and even moisture. Mist the soil to avoid washing away the tiny seeds.

Pricking out: Transplant seedlings with 2–4 true leaves individually into small pots. Keep the seedlings in a bright, not-too-warm place to prevent them from becoming leggy. Harden them off outdoors for several days before planting out.

Planting out (after May 15–20): After the last frosts, plant in a sunny spot, spacing plants about 30 × 30 cm apart. At the same time, you can also sow seeds directly outdoors, then thin the seedlings to the correct spacing.

Care: The plant has few requirements—water mainly during prolonged dry spells, and somewhat more often in containers. It does not need heavy feeding. When growing in containers, ensure good drainage so water does not collect around the roots.

Uses

Cephalophora is primarily an aromatic ornamental plant. Flowering stems are traditionally dried and used in potpourri and scented sachets for wardrobes and drawers. Fresh sprigs add a lively touch to small bouquets, while plants in pots on the terrace or balcony bring a fruity fragrance to summer. It is also well suited to sensory gardens and makes an interesting addition to an herb collection.

Gardener's tip

Cut stems for drying on a dry, sunny day, when most of the flower heads have turned yellow. Tie them into loose bundles and dry them in a well-ventilated, shaded place—this helps preserve the most fragrance.
