A very old Belgian variety with large, yellow-orange fruits. Yellow Belgian is a traditional regional tomato variety from Belgium. The plants are vigorous, indeterminate (tall-growing) and reach 100–200 cm. They produce large yellow-orange fruits with firm, juicy, mildly sweet flesh and excellent flavor. This is a mid-early variety, grown with stakes or strings.

What makes this variety special
This variety has a long history of cultivation in Belgian gardens, passed down through generations, and is not a modern hybrid. Its fruits combine an eye-catching warm color with a firm, meaty interior – they are juicy and have plenty of flesh, while tasting milder than many red varieties.
The plants are vigorous and productive – according to the producer, under good conditions they can yield 2–4 kg of fruit per plant. As a mid-early variety, it produces its first ripe fruits around 2.5 months after planting. The most reliable harvests come from a greenhouse or polytunnel, but in a warm summer the variety also does well outdoors.
Growing step by step
Sowing (March–April, under cover): Sow the seeds about 0.5 cm deep in a light seed-starting mix, around 6–8 weeks before the planned planting date. Maintain a temperature of 20–25 °C; germination usually takes 7–10 days. After the seedlings emerge, give them plenty of light and lower the temperature to around 18 °C to keep the plants compact.
Pricking out: When the seedlings have 2–4 true leaves, transplant them individually into pots, burying them a little deeper than they were growing – tomatoes produce roots along the buried part of the stem. Harden off the seedlings outdoors for 7–10 days before planting out.
Planting out (after May 15–20): Plant in an unheated greenhouse or polytunnel from early May, and outdoors after the risk of frost has passed. Space plants about 100 × 50 cm apart. Plant deeply, burying most of the stem to strengthen the root system, and insert a stake or attach a string right away.
Care: Train plants to one or two stems, regularly removing the side shoots that grow in the leaf axils. Water regularly at the base, avoiding wetting the leaves, to reduce the risk of blight. Feed the tomatoes with compost and an organic fertilizer rich in potassium, and remove the lower leaves when they start touching the ground.
Uses
The large, juicy fruits are best eaten fresh – sliced for salads and sandwiches, also paired with red and dark tomatoes for a colorful effect. Their mild, slightly sweet flavor also makes them ideal for chilled soups and sauces, while any surplus can be used for preserves, such as yellow tomato purée.
Gardener's tip
Large fruits on tall tomato plants ripen faster and more evenly if you top the plants in late August – pinch out the growing tip two leaves above the last flower truss that has a chance to set fruit before autumn. A ripe fruit comes away from the stem easily.
About the producer
The seeds come from Semailles – a small-scale Belgian producer of organic seeds based in the province of Namur in Wallonia. Semailles offers only open-pollinated varieties (no F1 hybrids), including many traditional and collector's varieties. Some seeds are grown on its own fields, while others are produced in collaboration with organic growers in Belgium and France. All batches are certified organic (inspection BE-BIO-01).
