Description

A tomato that we pull apart into pieces with our fingers. Voyage is one of the most unusual tomato varieties. Its red fruits are highly irregular and made up of many fused segments. Individual pieces separate easily from the rest of the fruit without damaging it. The flesh is thick, juicy, and sweet, and the plant grows tall and produces abundant crops.

What makes this variety stand out

The name evokes a journey: pieces can be pulled off the fruit one by one and eaten gradually, without a knife, while the rest of the fruit remains intact. This unusual structure always draws interest in the garden and at the table – a great choice for collectors and families with children.

Alongside its unusual shape, this variety is also practical: it is highly productive, and its thick, juicy flesh has a sweet flavor. Indeterminate plants grow best in a greenhouse or polytunnel, but can also be grown outdoors in a warm, sheltered spot.

Growing step by step

Sowing (March–April, under cover): Sow seeds from mid-March to early April, about 6–8 weeks before the planned planting-out date, at a depth of approx. 0.5–1 cm. Keep the growing medium slightly moist and the temperature steady at 20–25°C (ideally around 24°C). Seeds germinate in 7–10 days. Once they emerge, seedlings need as much light as possible – a south-facing windowsill or supplemental lighting works well; otherwise, plants quickly become leggy.

Pricking out: When seedlings develop 2–4 true leaves, transplant them individually into pots 8–10 cm in diameter, planting them a little deeper than before. Keep the seedlings in a bright spot at 15–20°C and water moderately but regularly. Begin hardening them off 7–10 days before planting out by placing them outdoors for a few hours each day.

Planting out (May): Plant seedlings in a greenhouse or unheated polytunnel from early May, and outdoors after May 15–20, once the risk of frost has passed. Space plants approx. 50 cm apart in rows, with 100 cm between rows. Bury the stem noticeably deeper than it was in the pot – the tomato will develop additional roots along it. Insert a stake or attach a support string straight away.

Care: Train plants to one or two stems and regularly remove the side shoots (suckers) that grow in the leaf axils – this directs the plant’s energy into fruit rather than foliage. Water at the base of the plant without wetting the leaves, as tomatoes are susceptible to late blight. Remove lower leaves so they do not touch the soil; mulch helps retain moisture and prevents soil from splashing onto the leaves. Tomatoes prefer soil rich in organic matter and potassium, so they respond well to compost and organic fertilizers for fruiting vegetables. The irregular fruits have many indentations where water can collect in humid conditions, so good air circulation and ventilating the greenhouse on warm days are important.

Uses

Voyage is first and foremost a tomato to eat fresh – as a snack, in salads, or shared at the table, where everyone can pull off a piece. It is ideal for a lunchbox or a picnic because there is no need to slice it. Its sweet, meaty flesh can also be used for sauces and preserves.

Gardener’s tip

Try planting Voyage beside a standard smooth-fruited variety and comparing them. The irregular fruits ripen best in full sun, so you can gradually thin out any leaves shading the trusses.
