What makes this variety special
Green cherry tomatoes are still a rarity and often surprise people with their flavor. Green Doctor Frosted has excellent flavor: it is distinctly sweet and juicy, while its firm flesh keeps the fruits from falling apart in salads.
This variety ripens in mid-season – the fruits are ready to harvest about 2.5 months after transplanting the seedlings. It can be grown in a greenhouse, a polytunnel, or a large pot on a sunny terrace or balcony. It grows best in fertile, well-drained soil.
Step-by-step growing guide
Sowing (March–April, under cover): Sow the seeds from mid-March to early April, about 6–8 weeks before transplanting, shallowly – cover them with a thin layer of growing medium, about as deep as the seed is large. Keep the medium slightly moist and maintain a steady temperature of 20–25°C (ideally around 24°C). Germination takes 7–10 days. Once they emerge, seedlings need as much light as possible – a south-facing windowsill or grow lights work well; otherwise, the plants will quickly become leggy.
Pricking out: When the seedlings have developed 2–4 true leaves, transplant them individually into pots 8–10 cm in diameter, planting them slightly deeper than before. Keep the seedlings in a bright place at 15–20°C, and water moderately but regularly. Start hardening them off 7–10 days before transplanting by placing them outdoors for a few hours each day.
Transplanting (May): Plant the seedlings in a greenhouse or unheated polytunnel from early May, or outdoors after May 15–20, once the risk of frost has passed. Space plants about 50 cm apart in rows, with 100 cm between rows. Plant the stem noticeably deeper than it was in the pot – the tomato will produce extra roots along it. Insert a stake or attach a support string straight away.
Care: Train plants to one or two stems and regularly remove side shoots (so-called suckers) growing in the leaf axils – this helps the plant put its energy into fruit rather than foliage. Water at the base of the plant without wetting the leaves, as tomatoes are susceptible to late blight. Remove the lower leaves so they do not touch the soil, and use mulch to retain moisture and prevent soil from splashing onto the leaves. Tomatoes prefer soil rich in organic matter and potassium, so they respond well to compost and organic fertilizers for fruiting vegetables. In a pot (at least 20 l), provide drainage and nutrient-rich growing medium, water regularly and feed the plants every 2 weeks.
Uses
Green Doctor Frosted is a tomato to enjoy fresh – straight from the vine, as a snack, or in colorful salads. The green fruits look striking mixed with red, yellow and dark cherry tomatoes. Their firm flesh also makes them suitable for pickling in jars.
Gardener’s tip
Because the fruits stay green, it is easy to pick them too early. A ripe fruit is lighter, with a slightly yellowish tinge; it becomes a little soft and comes away from the cluster easily – that is when it is sweetest.
About the producer
The seeds come from Semailles – a small-scale Belgian producer of organic seeds based in the province of Namur, Wallonia. Semailles offers only open-pollinated varieties (no F1 hybrids), including many traditional and collector varieties. Some seeds are propagated on its own fields, while others are produced in collaboration with organic growers in Belgium and France. All batches are certified organic (inspection code BE-BIO-01).
