Multicoloured fruits in shades of red and purple. Damascus Steel is a multicoloured tomato variety with fruits in shades of red and purple. The flesh is juicy, and the plants have an indeterminate growth habit, reaching 1–2 m in height. This is a mid-early variety that performs well in a greenhouse or polytunnel. It can also be grown in large pots.

What makes this variety special
Damascus Steel belongs to the group of multicoloured collector tomatoes. Its red-purple fruit stands out in the garden and on the plate – a variety for anyone who enjoys trying new colours and flavours in their garden.
The fruit ripens in mid-season, usually 2–3 months after planting out the seedlings. The variety is suitable for container growing, so you can place it on a sunny patio or balcony if you provide a sufficiently large pot and support.
Growing step by step
Sowing (March–April, under cover): Sow the seeds from mid-March to early April, about 6–8 weeks before the planned planting-out date, at a depth of about 1 cm. Keep the growing medium slightly moist and the temperature steady at 20–25°C (ideally around 24°C). Germination takes 7–10 days. Once they emerge, seedlings need as much light as possible – a south-facing windowsill or supplemental lighting works well; otherwise, plants quickly become leggy.
Pricking out: When the seedlings have developed 2–4 true leaves, transplant them individually into pots 8–10 cm in diameter, planting them slightly deeper than before. Keep the seedlings in a bright spot at 15–20°C and water moderately but regularly. Begin hardening them off 7–10 days before planting out by placing them outdoors for a few hours each day.
Planting out (May): Plant seedlings in a greenhouse or unheated polytunnel from early May, and outdoors after 15–20 May, once the risk of frost has passed. Space plants about 50 cm apart in rows, with 100 cm between rows. Bury the stem considerably deeper than it was in the pot – the tomato will grow additional roots along it. Put in a stake or attach a string for training straight away.
Care: Train the plants to one or two stems and regularly remove side shoots (known as suckers) growing in the leaf axils – this directs the plant’s energy into the fruit rather than foliage. Water at the base of the plant without wetting the leaves, as tomatoes are susceptible to potato blight. Remove lower leaves so they do not touch the soil, and use mulch to retain moisture and prevent soil from splashing onto the leaves. Tomatoes prefer soil rich in organic matter and potassium, so they respond well to compost and organic fertilisers for fruiting vegetables. In a pot (at least 20–30 l), water more often than plants grown in the ground and feed regularly, as the growing medium quickly becomes depleted.
Uses
Damascus Steel’s juicy fruits taste best fresh – in salads, on sandwiches and mixed with other colourful tomatoes. They can also be used for sauces or roasted with olive oil and herbs.
Gardener’s tip
It can be harder to judge when darker tomato varieties are ripe by their colour. A fruit is ripe when its colour stops changing, it feels slightly firm under your fingers and it comes away from the vine easily.
