Classic geranium red - uniform, compact, grown from seed. Gama F1 red is a hybrid bedding geranium with intensely vivid red flower heads measuring 10–12 cm across, borne above compact, heavily branching plants 30–35 cm tall. It blooms from June until frost and looks straight out of a catalogue, because F1 varieties are perfectly uniform - every plant in the packet is the same.
At a glance
- Height: 30–35 cm
- Flowering: June – October

- Sowing under cover: January – February (at 20–25°C)
- Planting out: May – June
- Difficulty: moderate - early sowing requires supplementary lighting
- Flower heads: 10–12 cm umbels, red
- Number of seeds per packet: approx. 5–10 seeds (0.05 g)
What makes this variety stand out
Gama F1 is a series of hybrid bedding geraniums propagated from seed, bred to provide a uniform, predictable result: all the plants in the packet have the same compact habit (30–35 cm), the same colour and bloom at the same time. They branch strongly from the base, bearing large, dense umbels 10–12 cm across above rounded leaves with dark rings. Flowering begins in June and continues uninterrupted until the first frosts.
Unlike F2 mixtures, F1 varieties are uniform and earlier, making them ideal when planting geraniums in a row or in several matching window boxes. F1 geranium seeds are expensive - there are only a few in a packet, but each seed produces one fully developed plant, comparable to a nursery-grown plug.
Growing step by step
Sowing (January – February, under cover): sow the seeds individually in 5–6 cm pots or seed trays, in a light, free-draining seed-starting medium, covering them with a thin layer (approx. 3 mm). Maintain a temperature of 20–25°C and steady, moderate moisture - seedlings emerge in around 14 days. Such early sowing requires a plant lamp for 12–14 hours a day; otherwise, the seedlings will become thin and leggy.
Pricking out: at the 2–3-leaf stage, transplant the seedlings into pots 8–10 cm in diameter. From this point, lower the temperature to 16–18°C and grow the plants in bright light - geraniums grown from seed develop slowly, taking 15–18 weeks from sowing to flowering.
Planting out (May – June): after the frosts have passed and one week of hardening off, plant the seedlings in beds 25–30 cm apart or in containers and window boxes (approx. 3–5 l per plant). Use fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil; choose a sunny position, although geraniums also tolerate light partial shade.
Care: water when the top layer of the growing medium has dried out - geraniums tolerate drought well but dislike overwatering. Feed weekly with fertiliser for flowering plants, preferably one with an increased potassium content. Remove spent flower heads at the base to encourage new ones to form.
Uses
Red geranium is a classic for balcony and window boxes - striking, visible from a distance and resistant to heat. In beds, planted in groups or in a row along a path, it creates a uniform border that flowers into autumn. It combines well with white lobelia, silver dusty miller and trailing ivy in pots and containers on the terrace. In autumn, the best specimens can be dug up, cut back and overwintered in a bright, cool (8–12°C) room.
Gardener's tip
There are only a few F1 geranium seeds in a packet, so sow each one separately in a small pot and do not skimp on warmth: at 20–25°C they germinate in two weeks, while on a cold windowsill they may rot. Without a plant lamp, it is better to delay sowing until the second half of February - the plants will flower slightly later but will not become leggy.
