Geraniums from seed – cheaper than plugs, in a full range of colors. This bedding geranium mix produces compact, highly branched plants 30–35 cm tall, topped with impressive, umbrella-shaped flower heads 10–12 cm in diameter in shades of red, pink, salmon and white. Instead of buying ready-grown plugs every year, sow a few seeds in January and by May you will have your own robust geraniums for beds and containers.

What makes this variety stand out
Bedding geranium (Pelargonium × hortorum) is the same geranium we know from balcony boxes and urban flower beds – with full, spherical umbels above rounded, often dark-ringed leaves. Seed-propagated varieties are naturally more compact and uniform than older cutting-grown plants, branch vigorously and flower continuously from June until frost. The F2 mix is a generation obtained from F1 varieties: the plants are somewhat more varied in color and habit, but the package is cheaper – ideal when you want a colorful, lively display rather than a perfectly uniform row.
Geranium seeds are expensive and large, which is why there are only a few in the packet – but each one produces a full-sized plant that will replace a purchased plug costing several złoty during the season.
Growing step by step
Sowing (January – February, under cover): sow the seeds individually into 5–6 cm pots or seed trays, in a light, well-drained seed-starting mix, covering them with a thin layer (approx. 3 mm). Maintain a temperature of 20–25°C and constant, moderate moisture – germination takes around 14 days. Such early sowing requires supplementary lighting with a grow lamp for 12–14 hours a day; otherwise the seedlings will become thin and leggy.
Pricking out: when the seedlings have 2–3 leaves, transplant them into pots 8–10 cm in diameter. From this point, lower the temperature to 16–18°C and keep the plants in bright light – geraniums grown from seed grow slowly, and 15–18 weeks pass from sowing to flowering.
Planting out (May – June): after the risk of frost has passed and a week of hardening off, plant the plants in beds 25–30 cm apart or into containers and boxes (approx. 3–5 l per plant). The soil should be fertile, humus-rich and well drained; choose a sunny position, although geraniums will also tolerate light partial shade.
Care: water when the top layer of the growing medium has dried out – geraniums tolerate drought well but dislike overwatering. Feed weekly with fertilizer for flowering plants, preferably one with an increased potassium content. Remove spent flower heads at the base to encourage the formation of new ones.
Uses
The color mix works well wherever a cheerful, multicolored display is desired: in flower beds in groups of 5–7 plants, in balcony boxes, pots on the terrace and by the entrance to the house, as well as in urban and rural flower beds. Geraniums tolerate heat and short periods of neglect in watering, making them one of the safest plants for a sunny balcony. In autumn, the finest specimens can be dug up, cut back and overwintered in a bright, cool room (8–12°C).
Gardener's tip
Every geranium seed is valuable, so do not sow them in a shared tray; sow them individually into small pots instead – this will prevent losses when pricking out. If you do not have a grow lamp, delay sowing until the end of February and place the pots in the brightest south-facing window; the plants will flower 2–3 weeks later, but they will be healthier than leggy January seedlings grown in a dark kitchen.
