What makes this variety stand out

The round, golden fruits resemble little nuggets, which inspired the variety’s name. Covered in fruits at different stages of ripeness – green, yellow, and tinged with purple – the bush makes an attractive feature on a balcony, patio, or greenhouse windowsill.

Golden Nugget is distinctly spicy, but not extremely hot, with a slightly sweet note. It’s a good choice for anyone who wants to add a little heat to a dish without making it too spicy, and also makes a good first chili pepper for a collection – as long as it is kept warm while germinating.

Growing step by step

Sowing (February – March, under cover): Sow the seeds 2–3 mm deep in a light, moist seed-starting mix. Keep the container at a constant temperature of 22–25 °C – hot peppers germinate more slowly than sweet peppers, usually within 7–10 days, so a heat mat is a good option. Keep the growing medium slightly moist, and give the seedlings as much light as possible after they emerge, ideally with supplemental lighting, to prevent them from becoming leggy.

Pricking out: When the seedlings have developed 3–4 true leaves, transplant them individually into pots 8–10 cm in diameter, keeping them warm. Harden off the seedlings during the last 7–10 days before planting out by putting them outside for a few hours each day.

Planting out (after May 15–20): Plant the seedlings in a greenhouse, polytunnel, or the warmest, most sheltered spot in the garden, spacing them about 50 × 50 cm apart. The soil should be fertile, well-drained, and enriched with compost. For container growing, choose a pot with a capacity of at least 5–10 l.

Care: Water regularly and moderately, preferably in the morning and without wetting the leaves – both letting the soil dry out and keeping it constantly wet will reduce fruiting. Feed the plants with an organic fertilizer high in potassium while the fruits are forming. The compact bushes usually do not need support. Place pots in the warmest, sunniest spot, sheltered from wind and rain.

Uses

Add the small fruits whole or sliced to salads, salsas, sauces, and grilled dishes when you want to give them a moderate spicy kick. They look lovely in jarred pickles. The plant also makes an attractive container plant for balconies and patios.

Gardener’s tip

Golden Nugget fruits are excellent for pickling whole in a sweet-and-sour brine – their golden color looks lovely in a jar. When harvesting, snip off the stems with scissors rather than pulling them off, to avoid damaging the delicate shoots.

About the producer

The seeds come from Semailles – a Belgian artisanal producer of organic seeds based in the province of Namur in Wallonia. Semailles offers only non-hybrid varieties (no F1), including many traditional and collector’s varieties. Some of its seeds are propagated in its own fields, while others are grown in collaboration with organic growers in Belgium and France. All batches are certified organic (inspection BE-BIO-01).
