Description

Cortaderia selloana – pampas grass

One of the most spectacular ornamental grasses: dense clumps of arching, cascading leaves and tall, fluffy panicles in shades of silvery white. Cortaderia selloana originates from South America (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay) and is valued as a cut flower – both fresh and dried. The plant is also known as cortaderia, pampas grass or white pampas grass.

Appearance and growth habit

The grass forms dense, upright clumps of long, arching, evergreen leaves. In September and October, it produces impressive panicles, usually silvery white. With its inflorescences, it reaches approximately 200 cm in height. Plants grown from seed are variable – the colour and shape of the panicles may differ slightly.

Cultivation

Pampas grass needs well-drained, fertile, humus-rich and warm soil. It is hardy in USDA zones 7–10, so in Poland it requires a warm, sheltered position and winter protection for the clump. It looks best as a solitary plant, planted at a spacing of approximately 200 cm.

Uses

The panicles are excellent for cut flowers and dried bouquets – they have been used in floral arrangements for over 150 years. The genus was named in 1818 in honour of the German botanist Friedrich Sellow, a researcher of South American flora.

    FAQ

    Is pampas grass cortaderia?

Yes. Pampas grass is the common name for cortaderia (Cortaderia selloana). In florists' shops, its dried plumes are also simply sold as “pampas.”

Does pampas grass survive the winter in Poland?

It is hardy in USDA zones 7–10, so in our climate it requires a warm, sheltered site and winter protection for the clump. The leaves are best tied up and left until spring.

How many seeds are there in 1 g?

According to the seed producer's data, 1 g contains approximately 5,600 very small seeds. The number of seeds does not indicate the number of plants.

How long do the seeds take to germinate?

Germination usually takes 3–4 weeks from sowing at a temperature of approximately 20°C. The seedlings are ready for pricking out after another 4–6 weeks.

Will the plumes be identical to those in the photo?

Plants grown from seed vary. The plumes are usually silvery white, but their shade and shape may differ from one plant to another.

How should the plumes be dried?

Cut the plumes when they are fully developed and dry them in a well-ventilated place with the flower heads facing downward. They are perfect for dried bouquets.
