Cortaderia selloana 'Rosea' – pink pampas grass

Pastel pink plumes that have been a staple of dried bouquets, wedding decorations and boho-style interiors for years. Cortaderia selloana 'Rosea' is a pink variety of pampas grass – grow clumps from your own seeds and cut fresh plumes for a vase every year.

Colour and plumes

The plumes appear in September and October and are usually pink, ranging from powder pink to a warmer salmon shade. Plants grown from seed are variable, so colour intensity may differ between specimens, and some plumes may be lighter. With its inflorescences, the grass reaches approx. 200 cm in height.

For bouquets and decorations

Cut the plumes when they are fully developed. Before drying, you can gently comb them out and set them with hairspray to reduce shedding. Pink plumes combine well with dried eucalyptus, cotton, honesty and light pampas grass – a classic combination in boho and wedding decorations.

Position and overwintering

The clump needs sun and well-drained, fertile, warm soil. Its hardiness is USDA 7–10, so in Poland it is best to choose a spot sheltered from the wind, tie the leaves into a bundle for winter and cover the base of the clump. Plant at a spacing of approx. 200 cm, preferably as a solitary plant on a lawn.

    FAQ

Will all the plants have pink plumes?

Plants grown from seed are variable. The plumes are usually pink, but the color intensity may vary, and some may be lighter.

How do I make a dried bouquet from the plumes?

Cut fully developed plumes, dry them in a well-ventilated place with the inflorescences facing downward, gently comb them out, and set them with hairspray. Pampas grass prepared this way sheds less and retains its color.

Does pink pampas grass overwinter in Poland?

It is hardy in USDA Zones 7–10, so it needs a sheltered position, its leaves tied up for winter, and the base of the clump covered.

How many seeds are there in 1 g?

According to the producer's data (1000-seed weight of approximately 0.19 g), 1 g contains approximately 5,200 seeds. The number of seeds does not indicate the number of plants.

How long do the seeds take to germinate?

Germination usually takes 3–4 weeks from sowing at a temperature of approximately 20°C, and the seedlings are pricked out after a further 4–6 weeks.
