Description

Allium fistulosum – Welsh onion

A perennial onion that regrows from the same clump every year and produces fresh, delicate green leaves from spring to autumn. Allium fistulosum forms very large, hollow, tubular leaves with a mild onion flavor - it is the classic “green onion” of Asian cuisine and a plant that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. The plant is also known as winter bunching onion, winter onion, Japanese onion or Welsh onion.

Appearance and growth habit

The plant grows in compact, upright clumps. The leaves are linear, tubular and hollow, with a medium-green color. In July and August, spherical, yellowish-white flower heads appear on hollow stems, and the plant reaches approximately 40 cm in height when in flower.

Cultivation

This is a frost-hardy perennial in USDA zones 4–7, so it overwinters outdoors in the ground without difficulty in Poland. It has no special soil requirements - ordinary garden soil is sufficient. The clump can be harvested for its green leaves for years, and divided and replanted every few seasons.

Uses

The young leaves and the lower, thickened parts of the shoots are used like chives and green onions: in salads, cottage cheese, soups, wok dishes and as a green garnish. The flowers are popular with bees, so Welsh onion is also well suited to pollinator-friendly gardens.

    FAQ

What is another name for Welsh onion?

In Poland, it is also known as winter bunching onion, winter onion, Japanese onion, and Welsh onion chives. In Asian cuisine, it is a popular green onion (Welsh onion).

How is Welsh onion different from regular onion?

Welsh onion does not form a large bulb. It is grown for its tubular, hollow leaves and thickened stem bases. It is a perennial: once planted, the clump grows back every year.

Does Welsh onion overwinter in the ground?

Yes. It is frost-hardy in USDA zones 4–7, so in Poland’s climate it overwinters in the garden without cover.

How many seeds are there in 1 g?

According to the seed producer’s data, 1 g contains approximately 414 seeds. The number of seeds does not equal the number of plants - some seeds will always fail to germinate.

At what temperature do the seeds germinate?

The seeds germinate quickly at a temperature of around 20°C with consistently moderate substrate moisture. Cover them with a thin layer of soil, and keep the seedlings in a cooler place after emergence.

Are the flowers useful in the garden?

Yes. Spherical flower heads appear in July and August and provide a source of nectar and pollen for bees.
