A classic that smells wonderful, feeds bees, and finds its way into the kitchen. English lavender, also known as narrow-leaved lavender, is a winter-hardy subshrub growing up to 50 cm tall, with silvery-gray, narrow leaves and purple flower spikes that fill the garden with the scent of Provence from June onward. Growing it from seed requires a little patience (and two weeks in the freezer), but once planted, it will grow in the same spot for ten years or more.

What makes this variety stand out
This is a botanical species, not a cultivated variety – meaning lavender with a full, classic composition of essential oils, the kind that has been grown for centuries for herbal medicine and perfumery. Of all lavenders, narrow-leaved lavender is the most frost-hardy (tolerating around -20°C), unlike French or Spanish lavender, which in Poland will survive only in a pot at best.
Lavender is simultaneously a medicinal plant (flowers for calming infusions), a culinary herb (a foundation of herbes de Provence and an addition to meat and fish), a cosmetic and ornamental plant, and an exceptionally nectar-rich species. Seed-grown plants vary – some will bloom slightly darker, others lighter – which looks even better in a naturalistic garden.
Growing step by step
Sowing (April – June, under cover or in a seedbed): first stratify the seeds: mix them with slightly damp sand in a bag and keep them in the freezer for 2 weeks. Then sow them shallowly, barely covering them with growing medium (they need light to germinate), at a temperature of approx. 25°C. Germination takes 2 to 4 weeks and is uneven – do not discard the seed tray too soon.
Pricking out: transplant seedlings at the 2–3-leaf stage into 8 cm pots, using a growing medium mixed with sand or perlite. Water sparingly – young lavender rots faster than it dries out.
Planting out (July – September): plant in the permanent position with 30–35 cm between plants in a row and 40–50 cm between rows. The soil must be well-drained, preferably light, with a neutral or alkaline pH; add gravel or sand to heavier soil. Choose a position in full sun.
Care: lavender prefers to be left alone: water only during prolonged drought and do not fertilize with nitrogen. Pruning is key – after flowering, shorten the shoots by one third, then prune again in early spring, but never into the woody part. It is worth lightly covering young plants with conifer branches during their first winter.
Uses
In the garden: beds, borders, low hedges, rock and gravel gardens, and pots on a sunny terrace. In the kitchen: dried flowers as a seasoning for roasted meat, fish, and desserts (use sparingly!), as well as for teas and syrups. At home: scented sachets, dried bouquets, and homemade cosmetics. Lavender is also a nectar-rich plant and a proven companion for roses and vegetables – its scent repels aphids and ants while attracting bees and bumblebees. Collect flowers for drying 2–3 times a year, when the lower half of the flower spike has opened.
Gardener's tip
Lavender grown from seed usually blooms only in its second year – during the first season, it develops its roots. No room in the freezer? Sow the seeds in autumn in a tray left outdoors: winter will stratify them for you, and in spring the seedlings will emerge densely and evenly.
