What makes this variety special
Crown daisy has long been grown as a leafy vegetable in East Asia, where it is known in Japanese cuisine as shungiku. Young leaves have a distinctive, herbaceous flavor with a hint of cress, adding a lively touch to salads and cooked dishes. Double Garland stands out for its full, densely packed flowers in a warm yellow shade, making it equally attractive in ornamental gardens.
This plant is easy to grow and has no special soil requirements: it thrives in any well-drained soil in a sunny spot. It flowers for a long time and is popular with bees and other pollinating insects, making it a great fit for a biodiversity-friendly garden. It can also be grown in pots.
Growing step by step
Sowing (March–April, under cover): Sow seeds in pots or plug trays, covering them with a thin layer of growing medium, to a depth equal to the seed's size. For germination, they need warmth of at least 20°C and consistently moderate moisture.
Pricking out and thinning: When seedlings have 4–5 leaves, transplant them individually into pots. For direct sowing, thin them to about 30 cm apart.
Planting out (after May 15–20): Plant out seedlings after the last frosts, spacing them 30 × 30 cm apart. From May, you can also sow seeds directly in their final growing positions. Sow several times at intervals of 3–4 weeks, through June, to ensure a continuous harvest of young leaves.
Care: Water moderately, avoiding prolonged drying out, which reduces leaf quality. Remove faded flowers to prolong flowering. For leaf production, harvest plants regularly by cutting the young tips; this encourages new growth.
Uses
Add young leaves raw to salads or cook them briefly; they work well in soups, stir-fries and fillings. The petals make an edible garnish for salads, sandwiches and desserts. The flowers are also suitable for cutting and using in small bouquets, while the plants themselves will brighten up flower beds, vegetable gardens and pots.
Gardener's tip
For leaf harvest, pick plants while they are young, before they start forming buds; the leaves are at their most tender then. If you want both leaves and flowers, set aside part of the bed for leaf harvest and leave the rest to flower.
