Round, white fruits with a lilac blush and firm flesh. Rotonda Bianca Sfumata di Rosa is a vigorous, high-yielding variety with round, fleshy fruits. The skin is white, delicately shaded lilac, giving the fruits a striking appearance. The flesh is firm, tasty and contains few seeds. Plants grow to 50–100 cm.

What makes this variety special
The round shape and firm flesh make the fruits ideal for stuffing and cutting into thick slices. Their low seed count is a kitchen advantage: the flesh is uniform and has a pleasant texture when baked.
This vigorous variety yields well; the producer reports yields of around 20–40 kg per 10 m² under its growing conditions. Like all eggplants, however, it needs plenty of warmth from sowing to harvest, so in Poland it is best grown in a greenhouse or polytunnel, and outdoors only in the warmest, most sheltered spot.
Growing step by step
Sowing (March, under cover): Sow the seeds in a light growing medium in pots or plug trays, about 0.5 cm deep. In a warm room, you can start as early as late February. Eggplant germinates only in warm conditions: it needs a constant temperature of at least 23–24°C, ideally around 25°C. Seedlings emerge after 10–20 days; if the seeds take a long time to germinate, it is worth raising the temperature slightly.
Pricking out: Transplant seedlings with 3–4 true leaves individually into pots 9–10 cm in diameter, keeping them in a warm, bright spot. Water lightly but regularly, and harden off the seedlings before planting them out.
Planting out (after 15–20 May): Plant in a greenhouse or polytunnel after 15 May, and outdoors only after 20 May or in early June, once nights are warm. Space plants about 50–60 cm apart. The soil should be well-drained and rich in humus; adding compost or well-rotted manure before planting is recommended.
Care: Water regularly, without letting the soil dry out, and try not to wet the leaves. Removing some side shoots and lower leaves improves light exposure to the fruits and encourages a good yield. Harvest fruits as they ripen, cutting them off with a sharp knife along with a piece of the stem; if left on the plant too long, they become bitter. As a precaution, practise crop rotation and ensure good air circulation.
Uses
The fruits are great for stuffing with meat, grains or vegetables, baking in slices, grilling and making layered bakes with tomato sauce and cheese. The baked flesh can be used to make an aromatic spread for bread. Their unusual colouring also makes them a decorative addition to a vegetable basket.
Gardener’s tip
At the end of August, remove new flowers and the youngest fruitlets. In our climate, they will not have time to ripen anyway, and the plant will direct its energy to the fruits that are already growing.
