Small purple fruits growing in clusters – a prolific and decorative eggplant. Pusa Purple Cluster is an early variety that produces small, cylindrical fruits in an intense purple color. The fruits set several at a time, so they can be harvested in whole clusters. Plants grow to 50–100 cm tall and are prolific and highly ornamental. According to the producer, the variety originates from India.

What makes this variety stand out
The clustered arrangement of the fruits is this variety’s hallmark – several slender fruits grow from one point, producing an abundant and striking harvest. Its early maturity makes it well suited to the Polish climate, where the warm season is shorter than in southern Europe.
Like all eggplants, Pusa Purple Cluster needs plenty of warmth from sowing to harvest. It gives the most reliable yields in a greenhouse or polytunnel; outdoors, plant it only in the warmest, most sheltered spot. The fruits are ready to harvest when their skin is firm and glossy.
Growing step by step
Sowing (March, under cover): Sow the seeds in a light growing medium in pots or module trays, about 0.5 cm deep; in a warm room, you can start as early as late February. Eggplant germinates only in warm conditions – it needs a steady temperature of at least 23–24°C, ideally around 25°C. Seedlings emerge after 10–20 days; if the seeds take a long time to germinate, it is worth raising the temperature slightly.
Pricking out: Transplant seedlings with 3–4 true leaves individually into pots 9–10 cm in diameter, keeping them warm and in a bright spot. Water lightly but regularly, and harden off the seedlings before planting out.
Planting out (after May 15–20): Plant in a greenhouse or polytunnel after May 15, and outdoors only after May 20 or in early June, once nights are warm. Space plants about 50–60 cm apart. The soil should be well-drained and rich in humus – adding compost or well-rotted manure before planting is recommended.
Care: Water regularly, making sure the soil does not dry out, and try to keep the leaves dry. Removing some side shoots and lower leaves improves light exposure for the fruits and encourages higher yields. Harvest the fruits regularly, cutting them off with a sharp knife along with a piece of the stem – if left on the plant too long, they become bitter. As a preventive measure, practice crop rotation and ensure good air circulation.
Uses
The small fruits are quick to prepare – they are suitable for frying and stewing whole or halved, for curries and Asian dishes, for grilling, and for pickling. Plants covered in clusters of purple fruits also make an attractive feature in the vegetable garden and greenhouse.
Gardener’s tip
Harvest the clusters while the fruits are still glossy and firm – it is better to pick them a little early than too late. Frequent harvesting encourages the plant to set more clusters.
