What makes this product stand out
Compared with ordinary all-purpose soil, seed-starting medium has a finer, uniform structure and low but safe fertilization for seedlings – the high salt concentration in “adult” soils can inhibit germination and burn delicate roots. Here, the starter dose of fertilizer is balanced to last for 3–4 weeks, exactly until pricking out.
The coconut fiber BIOVITA adds to the mix is a natural, fully biodegradable component with excellent water-holding capacity: the medium retains moisture longer while remaining better aerated and does not compact into a hard crust when it dries out. As a result, seeds germinate evenly and the root system develops faster. A pH of 6–7 suits most vegetables, herbs, and flowers.
How to use it step by step
Preparation: Pour the growing medium into a clean container with drainage holes (seed tray, plug tray, or pots), press it down lightly, and level it. If the soil is dry, moisten it before sowing – germinating seeds do not like sudden flooding.
Sowing: Sow seeds at a depth of approximately three times their diameter (very fine seeds, such as begonias or petunias, should be sown on the surface and only pressed down). Cover larger seeds with a thin layer of the same medium. When sowing exotic seeds that take weeks to germinate, cover the container with plastic film or a humidity dome to retain moisture.
Watering and temperature: Water sparingly but enough to keep the medium slightly moist at all times – preferably with a mister or from below, through a saucer. Keep the containers at as constant a temperature as possible; warm growing medium and an even temperature significantly speed up emergence.
Pricking out and hardening off: When the seedlings produce their first pair of true leaves, prick them out into pots, also using this growing medium. After 3–4 weeks from emergence, start feeding with a weak fertilizer solution. For 10–14 days before planting outdoors, harden off the plants by placing them outside for several hours during the day.
Uses
The growing medium is suitable for sowing vegetables and herbs for transplanting (tomatoes, peppers, chili peppers, basil), annual and perennial flowers, as well as exotic seeds – cacti, succulents, palms, and carnivorous plants, for which it is worth mixing in approx. 20–30% perlite or vermiculite for better drainage. It is also suitable for pricking out, rooting cuttings, and planting bulbs and tubers (begonias, dahlias, lilies) in pots.
Gardener’s tip
Before sowing, sift the growing medium through a kitchen or gardening sieve with a mesh size of approx. 5 mm and use the fine fraction to cover the seeds. The smallest seeds (petunias, lobelias, tobacco, and many exotic species) are not strong enough to push through clumps – an even, fine covering layer is the simplest way to achieve much more uniform emergence.
