What makes this product stand out
Coconut fibre works like a sponge: it absorbs a lot of water and then releases it gradually to the roots, together with dissolved nutrients. At the same time, it is noticeably lighter than peat and does not compact into a dense, crusted mass – the roots have access to air, while water does not stagnate. Its pH of 5.5–6.5 is close to neutral and suits most houseplants, vegetables, and herbs.
Unlike compressed briquettes, the BIOVITA “loose” version does not require soaking or breaking up – it is ready to use straight from the bag. Just remember that coconut fibre itself is low in nutrients: if it is to be the only growing medium, the manufacturer recommends mixing it with organic fertiliser or feeding the plants regularly with liquid fertiliser.
How to use it step by step
Preparation: Pour the fibre out of the bag and, if necessary, lightly moisten it with water – it should be damp but not dripping. There is no need to soak or sieve it.
Sowing and rooting: Fill trays or pots with clean fibre (optionally add 20–30% perlite for even better drainage), sow seeds at the required depth, insert cuttings, and press them down gently. Coconut fibre maintains even moisture, which supports germination.
Mixing with soil: Add 1 part fibre to 2–3 parts universal potting soil; heavy, clay garden soil can be loosened with a ratio of up to 1:1. The fibre loosens and aerates the medium while also increasing its water-holding capacity.
Watering and fertilising: Water when the top layer has dried out – coconut fibre dries more slowly than soil, so it is easy to overwater it out of habit. When growing in pure fibre, start feeding the plants with liquid fertiliser from the second or third week, or mix the fibre with organic fertiliser before planting.
Uses
A versatile component for home growing: sowing seeds (including exotic species – coconut fibre is less prone to mould than peat), rooting cuttings and slips, a growing medium for orchids, anthuriums, and other epiphytes when mixed with bark and expanded clay, a loosening additive for soil used for monsteras, philodendrons, citrus plants, and balcony vegetables, as well as a medium for hydroponics and soilless cultivation. The manufacturer also recommends it as a terrarium substrate and for keeping exotic animals. Combined with perlite and vermiculite, it creates a light, stable mix for vegetable and flower seedlings.
Gardener’s tip
Coconut fibre naturally tends to bind calcium and magnesium from water, which can cause young plants grown in pure fibre to become paler despite regular watering. If you grow plants in pure coconut fibre for longer than a few weeks, use a fertiliser containing calcium and magnesium (or at least water them occasionally with water containing a small amount of calcium fertiliser) – the leaves will quickly regain their colour.
