What makes this product stand out
Coconut fibre works like a sponge: it absorbs a lot of water and then gradually releases it to the roots, together with dissolved nutrients. At the same time, it is noticeably lighter than peat and does not compact into a dense, crusted mass - the roots have access to air and water does not stagnate. Its pH of 5.5–6.5 is close to neutral and suits most houseplants, vegetables and herbs.
Unlike compressed briquettes, the BIOVITA “loose” version does not require soaking or breaking up - it is ready-to-use growing medium straight from the bag. Just remember that coconut itself is low in nutrients: if it is to be the only growing medium, the manufacturer recommends combining it with organic fertiliser or feeding the plants regularly with liquid fertiliser.
How to use it step by step
Preparation: pour the fibre out of the bag and, if necessary, lightly moisten it with water - it should be damp but not dripping. There is no need to soak or sift it.
Sowing and rooting: fill trays or pots with clean fibre (optionally adding 20–30% perlite for even better drainage), sow the seeds at the required depth, insert the cuttings and press them down gently. Coconut maintains even moisture, which supports germination.
Mixing with soil: add 1 part fibre to 2–3 parts universal potting soil; heavy, clay garden soil can be loosened even at a 1:1 ratio. The fibre loosens and aerates the growing medium while also increasing its water-holding capacity.
Watering and fertilising: water when the top layer has dried out - coconut dries more slowly than soil, so it is easy to overwater it out of habit. When growing in pure fibre, start feeding the plants with liquid fertiliser from the second or third week, or mix the fibre with organic fertiliser before planting.
Application
A versatile component for home growing: seed sowing (including exotic species - coconut does not mould as easily as peat), rooting cuttings and offsets, growing medium for orchids, anthuriums and other epiphytes when mixed with bark and expanded clay, loosening amendment for soil used with monsteras, philodendrons, citrus plants and balcony vegetables, as well as a medium for hydroponics and soilless cultivation. The manufacturer also recommends it as terrarium substrate and for keeping exotic animals. With perlite and vermiculite, it creates a light, stable mix for vegetable and flower seedlings.
Gardener's tip
Coconut naturally tends to bind calcium and magnesium from water, which can make young plants grown in pure fibre look paler despite being watered. If you grow in pure coconut for longer than a few weeks, use a fertiliser containing calcium and magnesium (or at least water occasionally with a little calcium fertiliser) - the leaves will quickly regain their colour.
