The sweetest dark cherry tomato you’ll find. Black Cherry is a tall, indeterminate tomato covered with clusters of small, purplish-brown, cherry-sized fruits. The flavor is exceptional: very sweet, with depth and a subtle smoky note typical of dark varieties. Harvest handfuls from July until the first frosts – from the garden bed, under cover and from a large pot on the patio.

What makes this variety stand out
Black Cherry is one of the world’s most highly regarded cherry tomato varieties and practically the only dark cherry tomato with such an established reputation. The fruits ripen from green through brown to deep purple with greenish shoulders and – importantly – do not split as easily as many other small-fruited varieties. The plants are very productive, grow vigorously and, with good support, reach 2 m or more. The trusses are long, and the fruits ripen successively, so harvesting continues throughout the season.
The variety performs well both outdoors with stakes and under cover – in a tunnel, it produces a noticeably larger and earlier crop. It is also a good choice for gardeners just starting out with tall tomatoes: it forgives mistakes and bears fruit even in a poorer season.
Growing step by step
Sowing (March – early April, under cover): sow the seeds in pots or seed trays filled with a light seed-starting mix, at a depth of approx. 0.5–1 cm, at 20–25°C. Germination occurs after 7–14 days. Once the seedlings emerge, lower the temperature to 16–18°C and provide as much light as possible to prevent them from becoming leggy.
Pricking out: when the first pair of true leaves appears, transplant the seedlings into 8–10 cm pots, planting them slightly deeper than they were growing – the buried stem will produce additional roots.
Planting out (mid-May): after the risk of frost has passed, plant hardened-off seedlings outdoors at a spacing of 60–70 × 50–60 cm, immediately beside stakes or strings at least 1.8 m high. Under cover, they can be planted out 2–3 weeks earlier. The soil should be fertile and rich in humus, and the position sunny and sheltered.
Care: train the plants to one or two stems, regularly removing suckers (side shoots growing from the leaf axils). Water regularly at the root, not onto the leaves, and from the formation of the first fruits, fertilize every 2 weeks with tomato fertilizer. At the end of August, it is worth pinching out the top above the last truss that will have time to ripen.
Uses
Black Cherry is made for eating fresh – straight from the plant, in salads, on cheese boards and in colorful cherry tomato mixes with yellow and red varieties. The small, dark fruits make an attractive garnish, work wonderfully in whole-fruit pickles, and, when roasted or partially dried in the oven, provide a concentrated, sweet and smoky base for pasta dishes. Thanks to its long trusses and upward growth, the variety makes good use of space by a wall or fence or in a large pot on the patio (min. 15–20 l).
Gardener’s tip
Dark tomatoes can be tricky to judge for ripeness – do not wait until they turn black. Black Cherry is ready when the fruit is reddish-brown, the shoulders around the stem are still slightly green, and it feels soft and comes away from the truss easily. If left on the plant too long, it quickly becomes mealy and loses its sweetness.
