Chili for those who like to taste the flavor, not just the heat. Harvey is an early, high-yielding pepper with long, conical fruits that ripen from light yellow through gold to dark orange. The flesh is only mildly hot—closer to gentle spiciness than fiery chili—so it is an excellent substitute for sweet pepper in dishes that need more character. It performs well both outdoors and under cover, even in a less favorable season.

What makes this variety stand out
Harvey is one of the few peppers that can be eaten in two ways: young, light-yellow fruits are delicate and almost sweet, while those left on the plant to ripen fully develop an intense orange color and a more pronounced, yet still pleasantly mild, heat. The fruits are long (12–15 cm), thin-walled, produced abundantly and ripen relatively evenly, so harvesting continues from August until the first cold weather.
The producer emphasizes the variety’s tolerance of unfavorable conditions—Harvey is not as troubled by a cooler week in June or a rainy summer as tropical hot peppers. The plant has an open, upright habit and fairly flexible stems, so it is worth supporting it when heavily laden with fruit.
Growing step by step
Sowing (March, under cover): sow the seeds in trays or plug trays filled with a light, well-drained growing medium, at a depth of approx. 0.5–1 cm. The optimum germination temperature is 22–25°C; seedlings emerge after 10–14 days. Peppers germinate slowly and unevenly in cool conditions, so a heating mat or a spot above a radiator is very helpful.
Pricking out: when the seedlings develop their first pair of true leaves, transplant them into 8–10 cm pots. Grow the seedlings at 18–22°C in a bright place—without supplementary lighting, they can easily become leggy and weak. Harden them off for 7–10 days before planting out by placing them outdoors on warm days.
Planting out (second half of May): once the risk of frost has passed, plant the seedlings outdoors, in a polytunnel or in pots with a capacity of at least 5–7 L, spacing them 40 × 40 cm apart. The soil should be fertile, humus-rich and warm up well; choose a sunny position sheltered from the wind. With flexible shoots, insert a stake immediately.
Care: water regularly and moderately, directing the water to the base of the plant—peppers dislike both drought and standing water. Feed every two weeks with a fertilizer for fruiting vegetables, rich in potassium. Mulching helps retain moisture and warmth in the soil. Harvest the first fruits when they are light yellow, leaving the rest to develop their full color.
Uses
Harvey is a pepper for everyday cooking: raw in salads and on sandwiches (young fruits), for frying and grilling, for stuffing and baking, and for preserving—in marinades, pastes and mildly spicy sauces. Ripe orange fruits dry and grind well into a mild seasoning. Thanks to its compact size and high yield, it also performs well in container cultivation on a sunny balcony or terrace.
Gardener’s tip
If you want orange fruits, do not pick everything while it is still light yellow—but do not leave every fruit to ripen fully either. Regularly harvesting some of the fruits encourages the plant to set more, while those left on the plant ripen faster. At the end of September, pick all the fruits regardless of color—they will ripen indoors on a windowsill.
