Description

Chocolate? Only in appearance. Habanero Chocolate is a variety of the classic habanero with an exceptional dark brown (chocolate) color and a distinctive, slightly smoky aroma. The brown, wrinkled fruits look as if they were cast from dark chocolate—but don't be fooled: there are 300,000 Scoville units inside.

What makes this variety stand out

Among Habanero varieties, Chocolate is most highly valued by chili connoisseurs. The brown color is not merely aesthetic—it comes with a different, much deeper aromatic profile. Its flavor has earthy, slightly smoky, almost smoked notes. The compact plant, densely covered with brown fruits, also makes it an exceptionally decorative potted plant.

Growing step by step

Sowing (February, under cover): sow the seeds very early, at a temperature of 25–28°C. A seedling heat mat significantly improves germination.

Pricking out: transplant the seedlings into 8–10 cm pots when they have their first true leaves.

Planting out (second half of May): plant in the ground or pots (min. 5 l), spacing plants 40 × 40 cm apart. Choose the warmest possible position—against a wall or in a polytunnel.

Care: water regularly and moderately at the base of the plant. Fertilize with a fertilizer for fruiting vegetables every 10 days. The first fruits ripen in August/September.

Uses

For processing only. Ideal for dark, smoky sauces (e.g. mole, chili BBQ sauce), smoked marinades, and pastes with garlic and tomato. Unlike orange habanero, it pairs better with meat than with fruit.

Gardener's tip

When smoked (hot- or cold-smoked), Habanero Chocolate develops its full potential—the smoky notes become stronger, while the heat becomes deeper and rounder. Try smoking a handful of fruits once over hickory or apple wood before grinding them into powder—it's a whole new dimension of spice.
