Nettle fertilizer is a classic of natural gardening—but homemade nettle feed requires a barrel, two weeks of fermentation and neighbors with strong nerves. How to use it step by step
Preparation: shake the sachet before use—the plant fertilizer may contain natural sediment. For spraying, strain the solution through a fine sieve to prevent clogging the sprayer nozzle.
Watering (root application): dilute the concentrate in water according to the label; the usual practice is approx. 50 ml per 1 l of water (demanding plants such as tomatoes or cucumbers may receive a stronger solution, while lettuce and herbs should receive a weaker one, approx. 20–25 ml/l). Water directly around the plants onto moist soil every 7–14 days.
Spraying (foliar application): use a weaker solution for foliar feeding, approx. 20–25 ml per 1 l of water. Spray the leaves in the morning or evening, never in full sunlight, and do not apply to leafy vegetables shortly before harvest.
Repeat applications: the fertilizer works quickly but briefly—repeat the treatment every 1–2 weeks during intensive growth (May–August). Stop fertilizing in autumn, when plants finish their growing season.
Application
Nettle concentrate is intended primarily for vegetables—tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, brassicas and leafy vegetables—in open ground, tunnels and balcony containers, but it is also suitable for herbs, bedding flowers and potted plants lacking nitrogen (paler, smaller leaves). It complements BIOVITA granulated organic fertilizers perfectly: the granules provide slow, long-lasting nutrition, while nettle fertilizer delivers a quick boost when the plant is growing most intensively. It is also recommended as a mild fertilizer for young seedlings after pricking out—in that case, use it in a highly diluted form.
Gardener's tip
Nettle fertilizer is primarily a source of nitrogen, so treat it as a “leaf fertilizer”: use it while plants are building green mass, and when tomatoes and peppers begin flowering and setting fruit, reduce nettle watering in favor of a fertilizer richer in potassium. Otherwise, you may end up with lush, dark green bushes bearing few fruits.
