Saribus rotundifolius – Round-leaved Palm
Saribus rotundifolius, formerly classified as Livistona rotundifolia, is one of the most distinctive fan palms native to Southeast Asia. This species underwent significant taxonomic changes – in 2011, after DNA studies, it was moved from the genus Livistona to the revived genus Saribus. The genus name Saribus comes from the local name used in the Moluccan languages, while the species name rotundifolius means "with round leaves" in Latin.
This impressive palm stands out among other members of the Arecaceae family with its unique morphological features and rapid growth rate. In its natural habitat, it is one of the tallest representatives of the former genus Livistona, reaching impressive sizes and forming characteristic leaf crowns.
Botanical description and plant appearance
Saribus rotundifolius is a dioecious palm, forming a single, slender trunk with a diameter of 15-25 cm. In natural conditions, it can reach a height of 40-45 meters, although some sources report sizes of 24-27 meters. The trunk is smooth, brown, with visible rings of scars from fallen leaves and covered with beautiful gray fibers in the upper part beneath the crown.
The greatest ornament is the characteristic fan-shaped leaves with an almost round outline, which can reach a diameter of 150 cm. Young specimens have leaves wider than long, almost perfectly round and shiny. As the plant matures, the leaves become more divided and less regular. Leaf segments radiate outward, divided to about half the length of the leaf blade.
The leaf petioles are long and equipped with small spines. Leaves on young palms are about 1.5 meters wide and round, while older specimens have smaller, costapalmate leaves that do not form a full circle.
Biological cycle and special features
In natural conditions, the palm flowers year-round, producing small, yellowish flowers gathered in inflorescences. Saribus rotundifolius is a hermaphroditic plant – flowers contain both male and female organs. After flowering, spherical fruits develop, which go through various color phases – from yellow, through orange and red, to dark purple or black.
A distinctive feature of this species is its extremely fast growth rate under optimal conditions. In a tropical climate with adequate humidity and warmth, it can be one of the fastest-growing palms in the world. Cases have been recorded of growth from seedling to 2-2.5 meters in height in just 3 years.
Temperature tolerance
Saribus rotundifolius is a tropical plant that requires warm and humid conditions. It grows best at temperatures of 22-30°C with high air humidity. The plant is very sensitive to low temperatures - it tolerates short-term drops to about -1°C, but below this value it suffers damage.
In climate zones corresponding to USDA 10a-11, it can be grown outdoors year-round. In the temperate climate of Europe, it requires cultivation indoors or in greenhouses for most of the year, with the possibility of placing it outdoors only during the warmest summer months.
Plant uses
In its native countries, Saribus rotundifolius has a wide range of practical uses. The leaves are used for roofing, wrapping food, and making fans and other utility items. The seeds and palm heart are edible. The plant also plays an important cultural role - in the Philippines, the leaf of this palm is an unofficial national symbol.
In temperate climate countries, Saribus rotundifolius is valued primarily as an ornamental plant. Thanks to its spectacular leaves and elegant silhouette, it works perfectly as a potted plant in bright interiors, conservatories, offices, and hotels. Young specimens are especially attractive due to their round, shiny leaves.
Who is this species for
Saribus rotundifolius is a plant for lovers of exotic flora who appreciate spectacular tropical plants. Due to its requirements for warmth and humidity, it is best suited for people with experience in palm cultivation or at least basic knowledge of tropical plant care. It requires systematic care and appropriate conditions but offers a unique tropical appearance in return.
Summary
Saribus rotundifolius is one of the most beautiful fan palms, which reaches impressive sizes in its natural environment and serves as an elegant interior decoration in home cultivation. It is characterized by round, shiny leaves, fast growth under optimal conditions, and relatively high requirements for temperature and humidity.
Although it requires some cultivation experience, with proper care it can delight the eye with its tropical charm for many years. For residents of the temperate climate zone of Europe, it is an excellent way to introduce an exotic atmosphere into the home interior, especially in bright rooms with high air humidity.
