Saribus rotundifolius, formerly classified as Livistona rotundifolia, is one of the most distinctive fan palms native to Southeast Asia. This species underwent significant taxonomic changes – in 2011, after DNA studies, it was moved from the genus Livistona to the revived genus Saribus. The genus name Saribus comes from the local name used in the Moluccan languages, while the species name rotundifolius means "with round leaves" in Latin.
This impressive palm stands out among other members of the Arecaceae family with its unique morphological features and rapid growth rate. In its natural habitat, it is one of the tallest representatives of the former genus Livistona, reaching impressive sizes and forming characteristic leaf crowns.
Botanical description and plant appearance
Saribus rotundifolius is a dioecious palm, forming a single, slender trunk with a diameter of 15-25 cm. In natural conditions, it can reach a height of 40-45 meters, although some sources report sizes of 24-27 meters. The trunk is smooth, brown, with visible rings of scars from fallen leaves and covered with beautiful gray fibers in the upper part beneath the crown.
The greatest ornament is the characteristic fan-shaped leaves with an almost round outline, which can reach a diameter of 150 cm. Young specimens have leaves wider than long, almost perfectly round and shiny. As the plant matures, the leaves become more divided and less regular. Leaf segments radiate outward, divided to about half the length of the leaf blade.
The leaf petioles are long and equipped with small spines. Leaves on young palms are about 1.5 meters wide and round, while older specimens have smaller, costapalmate leaves that do not form a full circle.

In climate zones corresponding to USDA 10a-11, it can be grown outdoors year-round. In the temperate climate of Europe, it requires cultivation indoors or in greenhouses for most of the year, with the possibility of placing it outdoors only during the warmest summer months.
