Night and day in a single flower. Night & Day is a compact snapdragon with exceptionally contrasting flowers: velvety, dark, almost black-red petals meet a snow-white throat, complemented by dark, brownish-tinged foliage. Compact, heavily branched plants bloom from June until frost and fit into any balcony planter.

What makes this variety special
Night & Day is one of the most recognisable snapdragon varieties in the world – no other variety combines such deep red with pure white. The flowers are large for a compact variety, densely set on short spikes, while the dark leaves make the plant look decorative even before it blooms. From a distance, a bed of Night & Day makes a burgundy impression; up close, each flower flashes white.
The low, bushy habit means that the plants do not need support and do not break in the rain. The variety tolerates cool weather well, starts flowering early and, after being cut back in July, regrows for an autumn flush of flowers.
Growing step by step
Sowing (March – April, under cover): Sow the very small seeds on the surface in trays filled with light, sieved growing medium and do not cover them – snapdragons germinate in light. Moisten the medium with a sprayer; maintain a temperature of 18–20°C. Germination takes 10–14 days. After emergence, lower the temperature to 15°C to prevent the seedlings from becoming leggy.
Pricking out: When the seedlings have 2 pairs of true leaves, prick them out into plug trays or 7 cm pots. Grow the seedlings in cool (12–16°C), bright conditions. When they reach 8–10 cm, pinch out the tips so the plants branch out and flower on numerous stems.
Planting out (May): Plant hardened-off seedlings in their permanent position from the beginning of May – snapdragons tolerate light frosts. Space plants 20 × 25 cm apart, or every 15–20 cm in balcony planters. Choose a sunny position and fertile, well-drained soil. You can also sow directly outdoors in April, but flowering will be about a month later.
Care: Water regularly at the base of the plant, avoiding wetting the leaves (risk of rust). Feed every 2–3 weeks with a fertiliser higher in potassium, and more often in containers. Cut off faded flower spikes just above the first branching point – the plant will produce new ones and continue flowering until frost.
Uses
Created for balconies and pots: in a planter with white lobelias or dusty miller, it looks spectacular. In the garden, plant it as edging and at the front of borders, in larger groups, as well as in cottage gardens and along paths. The short spikes are suitable for small bouquets. Bumblebees visit the flowers throughout the season – it is a valuable bee-friendly plant.
Gardener’s tip
The dark petals of Night & Day can fade slightly in strong, direct sunlight, while the plant flowers less abundantly in partial shade. The ideal compromise is a position with morning and midday sun, sheltered from the afternoon heat – on a balcony, an east- or south-east-facing aspect. And do not be afraid to prune: removing faded spikes at the right time extends flowering by several weeks.
