Classic corn on the cob - in an organic version. Golden Bantam is a mid-early sweet corn variety with yellow-orange, very sweet kernels. The cobs are suitable for cooking whole and serving with butter - a summer barbecue classic. The organic version means certified organic cultivation, without GMOs.
Golden Bantam is a variety known for over 100 years, valued for its reliability and flavor. The stems are stiff and upright, and do not branch. Each plant produces 1-2 cobs. The flavor is classic - sweet, juicy, and ideal when cooked with butter. Bonus: gluten-free, making it an excellent substitute for people with celiac disease.
Sowing (early May, directly into the ground): sow the seeds directly into the soil at a depth of 4-6 cm, spaced 40 × 40 cm apart. Sow 3-4 seeds in each spot - after emergence, leave the strongest plant.
Care: water regularly (corn does not tolerate drought) and weed. Apply organic fertilizer before sowing, and optionally feed with compost during the season.
Pollination: corn is pollinated by wind - plant at least 4 × 4 rows, not a single row. Otherwise, the cobs will be empty in the middle.
Harvest (August - September): harvest the cobs at the milk stage: the husk leaves begin to dry, and the kernels are full but still soft. When pressed with a fingernail, white “milk” comes out - this is a sign that they are ready. Once they reach the “dough” stage, the cobs are hard and less tasty.
Traditionally: cooked cobs with butter - the taste of summer street food. Excellent for grilling in the husks, for soups (corn cream soups), salads (chowder), and freezing (remove the kernels from the cob before freezing). Freshly picked cobs are always sweeter than store-bought ones - sugar begins to break down from the moment they are picked.
The best flavor is yours from the moment the cob is picked until no later than one hour in the oven. The sugar in corn kernels literally turns into starch with every passing minute - after 24 hours on the shelf, the flavor is already much worse. So: boil the water before going to the garden bed, and only then pick the cobs. Cook for 5-7 minutes. With butter.
