Basil with palm-sized leaves. Lettuce Leaved is a basil variety whose individual leaves can reach 8–10 cm in length - twice the size of classic Genovese basil. Frilly, curly and intensely green, with a deep aroma. Ideal for pesto, with enough leaves from one plant to fill an entire jar.
Lettuce Leaved is a classic of Italian cuisine, valued for the size and texture of its leaves. Thicker and meatier, they do not wilt as quickly as the small leaves of classic basil and tolerate heat treatment better. A single mature plant can easily produce 200–300 g of green leaves in a season.
Sowing (early April, under cover): sow the seeds in trays or plug trays at a temperature of 20–25°C. Germination occurs after 7–14 days.
Pricking out: when the first true leaves appear, transplant the seedlings into separate pots or plug trays.
Planting out (second half of May): after the last frosts, spacing the plants 20 × 30 cm apart - in the ground, pots or balcony boxes.
Care: water regularly and moderately (basil does not tolerate overwatering or drought). Pinching out the growing tips and flower heads extends the harvest and makes the plant bushier.
A classic for Genovese pesto (the larger the leaves, the easier they are to blend). Excellent for pizza, Caprese salads, tomato and mozzarella dishes, pickling cucumbers, sauces, and baked dishes with meat and fish. It can also be frozen in ice cubes with olive oil, preserving its aroma throughout the winter.
Basil flowers in July and August. The flowers look attractive, but as soon as flowering begins, the leaves start to lose their aroma. Pinch out the flower heads as soon as they appear. This will keep the plant producing aromatic leaves until September instead of directing all its energy into seed production.
