Orange flesh – an unexpected result. Sliced Orangeglo watermelon will surprise anyone unfamiliar with orange-fleshed varieties: beneath the classic dark green rind lies juicy, sweet, mango-orange flesh. The flavor is very similar to traditional watermelon, but the visual effect is completely different.
Orangeglo is valued for two features: first, its unusual orange flesh, which is a hit in fruit salads and Instagram photos. Second, its ability to set fruit also at lower temperatures, which is invaluable during a cool Central European summer. The fruits are large and can weigh up to 7 kg.
Sowing (mid-April – May): sow the seeds in 7–8 cm pots at a temperature of 20–24°C. Germination occurs after 7–14 days. Harden off plants grown indoors for 1–2 weeks before planting out.
Planting out (second half of May): plant seedlings with 4–5 leaves at a spacing of 1 × 1 m, in holes lined with manure or compost. Choose a sunny position sheltered from the wind.
Care: water moderately at the root, never over the leaves – watermelons do not tolerate moisture on their leaves. Apply potassium-phosphorus fertilizer from the moment the fruit begins to set.
Harvest (August – September): a ripe watermelon produces a dull sound when tapped, and the tendril on the stem closest to the fruit dries out. The rind remains green but becomes more matte.
Excellent eaten fresh – the orange flesh is a visual hit on a dessert plate. Perfect for fruit salads with feta and mint, or for smoothies with mango and yogurt. It can also be frozen in cubes for cocktails. The flavor is very sweet, slightly more honey-like and melon-like than that of classic red watermelon.
Leave only 2–3 fruits on each watermelon plant. If you leave all the fruitlets, the plant will spread its resources among small, unsweet fruits. In early July, walk along the bed and remove the smaller, poorly developed fruitlets – the remaining 2–3 will grow to full size and be exceptionally tasty.
