Description

Watermelon with a starry sky on its rind. Lune Étoile, also known as Moon and Stars, is a watermelon variety with green skin covered in yellow spots of various sizes—a pattern reminiscent of a starry sky. The fruit varies in shape, and its flesh is juicy and very tasty; its color depends on the fruit. Each plant usually produces 3–8 fruits.

What makes this variety special

This is one of the most decorative watermelon varieties. Golden spots—from tiny “stars” to large “moons”—appear on the fruit’s skin and often on the leaves too, making the plant eye-catching throughout the season.

Because the fruit varies in shape and flesh color, every harvest brings a little surprise. Watermelons are very demanding when it comes to warmth—they need temperatures above 20°C, so in Poland they grow best in a polytunnel, greenhouse, or exceptionally warm, sheltered spot.

Growing step by step

Sowing in pots (April – early May): Sow 2–3 seeds per pot in warm growing medium (20–30°C, ideally around 25°C). Seedlings emerge after 5–10 days. Once they emerge, keep the strongest seedling.

Transplanting (from mid-May – June): Plant in a polytunnel or greenhouse from mid-May, and outdoors only in June, once the nights are warm. Space plants 1 × 1 m apart. The soil should be fertile, enriched with compost or manure, and well-drained.

Training: To encourage larger fruit and limit growth, pinch out the main stem above the 4th leaf. After the next four leaves have developed on the two new shoots, pinch out their tips as well; you can do the same with the next four shoots.

Care: Water regularly but moderately, avoiding wetting the leaves—watermelons like warmth but do not tolerate drought well. Mulch helps retain moisture and suppress weeds. Leave space between plants to ensure good airflow and reduce the risk of powdery mildew. Grow watermelons in the same spot only every 3–4 years.

Uses

Watermelons ripen about a month after flowering; a ripe fruit sounds hollow when tapped. Harvest before the first frosts. Lune Étoile is primarily eaten fresh—as a refreshing snack, in fruit salads, smoothies, and sorbets. Its appearance also makes it a great garden decoration and an attractive centerpiece for the table.

Gardener’s tip

Reduce watering one week before the planned harvest—it lowers the risk of the fruit splitting just before harvest.
