A rare colour in the world of marigolds. The creamy white, fully double flower heads of Tagetes erecta are an unusual variant of a plant we usually associate with orange and gold. It softens intense colours in a flower bed beautifully, while planted on its own it creates the effect of a delicate, creamy cloud blooming from June until the first frosts.
This African marigold, with its fully double, creamy white flower heads, is a less obvious choice than classic yellow and orange varieties – and that is precisely why it is worth choosing. It works well in modern, monochromatic compositions, in cut-flower bouquets, and as a backdrop for intensely coloured plants. The flower heads are impressive, densely filled with petals, and last throughout the summer without requiring intensive care.
Sowing (April, under cover): sow the seeds in trays or plug trays filled with a light growing medium, at a temperature of approx. 18°C. Germination occurs after 7–14 days.
Pricking out: when the seedlings produce their first pair of true leaves, transplant them into individual pots.
Planting out (second half of May): once the risk of frost has passed, plant the seedlings in their permanent position at a spacing of 30 × 40 cm. You can also sow the seeds directly outdoors in May.
Care: marigolds are undemanding and grow in almost any soil. They like sun and regular, moderate watering. Removing faded flower heads prolongs flowering.
Ideal for flower beds, balcony boxes, patios and as a cut flower. Marigolds are also a classic companion plant in the vegetable garden – their roots release substances that deter soil nematodes, while their scent confuses pests searching for tomatoes, carrots or beans. Plant a row of marigolds along your vegetable bed – you will beautify the garden and gain natural protection.
Marigolds do not tolerate overwatering well. If the leaves begin to turn yellow from the bottom, you are probably watering too often – wait until the top layer of soil has dried out. In hot summer weather, watering 2–3 times a week is sufficient.
