Description

Mineral sponge for sowing and growing media. Agro horticultural vermiculite is a natural volcanic mineral that, when expanded at high temperatures, turns into lightweight, golden flakes with exceptional absorbency. It retains water and nutrients while aerating the growing medium - making it a favourite addition for sowing seeds and rooting cuttings. Approved for use in organic farming.

In brief

What makes this product stand out

Vermiculite is made from a layered mineral that “blooms” under the influence of high temperatures - it separates like an accordion and increases in volume many times over. These layers hold several times more water than the mineral itself weighs, and nutrient ions are retained along with the water, later being gradually released to the roots. As a result, the growing medium dries out more slowly, fertilisers are not washed out as quickly, and seedlings maintain even moisture without the risk of waterlogging.

Compared with perlite, vermiculite stores more water and is softer, making it the better choice for sowing and cuttings, while perlite is better where aeration is the main priority. BIOVITA offers it in a convenient 4-litre pack - exactly what is needed for a spring seedling-growing season at home.

How to use it step by step

Preparation: vermiculite is ready to use - it does not require rinsing or soaking. If you mix it with dry growing medium, do so in a bowl or bag so that the lightweight flakes do not blow away and are distributed evenly through the soil.

Adding to the growing medium: add approx. 10–30% vermiculite by volume to seed-starting soil or a seedling growing medium (e.g. 0.5–1.5 l per 5 l of soil) and mix thoroughly. For rooting cuttings, you can use pure vermiculite or a 1:1 mixture with perlite.

Covering seeds: cover seeds sown in moist growing medium with a thin (2–5 mm) layer of vermiculite. It keeps moisture around the seeds, allows light to reach light-germinating seeds and limits mould growth on the surface.

Watering: after sowing, moisten the surface with a spray bottle and water moderately - vermiculite retains water by itself, so it is easy to overdo it. The growing medium should be moist, not wet.

Application

Agro vermiculite is the foundation of home seed sowing - for both vegetables and herbs, as well as demanding exotic species that take a long time to germinate and need constant moisture. It works well as a growing medium for rooting cuttings, an addition to potting soil (for better retention of water and nutrients from fertilisers), and in organic growing media, such as mixes with coconut fibre. The manufacturer recommends it for application to the soil and for sowing seeds, in amateur and professional cultivation. Together with perlite and coconut fibre, it creates a lightweight, sterile seed-starting mix for exotic seeds from the mr.seed range.

Gardener's tip

Place seeds that take weeks to germinate (palms, citrus plants and many tropical plants) in a sealable bag with a handful of slightly moist vermiculite and keep it warm. The “baggie” method with vermiculite provides constant moisture without mould, and germinated seeds are easy to remove and transplant into pots.
