Description

Volcanic drainage that never breaks down. Agro horticultural pumice is a natural volcanic rock formed from rapidly cooling magma: lightweight, porous, and chemically inert. Added to soil, it loosens and aerates it while draining excess water; unlike perlite, it does not crumble or float to the surface when watered. Approved for use in organic farming – ideal for succulents, cacti, potted plants, and container-grown vegetables.

At a glance

  • Capacity: 5 l
  • Type: natural volcanic aggregate, BIO product
  • Composition: 100% pumice (volcanic rock), no additives

  • Certification: approved for use in organic farming

What makes this product stand out

Pumice is rock, not a factory-produced granule: each grain is full of microscopic pores that store air and water while remaining hard and stable. As a result, pumice-based substrate does not compact over time, does not lose its structure after several seasons, and does not alter soil pH – pumice is chemically inert and does not react with fertilizers.

Compared with perlite, pumice is heavier and does not float to the surface of the pot after watering. Compared with expanded clay, it has a larger absorbent surface and finer grains, so it works better mixed into the substrate rather than used only as a bottom layer. BIOVITA packs it in a convenient 5-litre bag, just right for a home collection of succulents or several larger pots of vegetables.

How to use it step by step

Preparation: before use, you can sift the pumice or rinse it lightly with water to remove transport dust – the mixture will be cleaner, and the pots will not get dirty during the first watering.

Substrate component: when preparing a mixture, add pumice at 20–40% of the volume (e.g. 1–2 l per 5 l of soil) and mix thoroughly with the other components. For succulents and cacti, feel free to use the upper end of the range; for vegetables and foliage plants, use the lower end.

Drainage: pour a layer of pumice into the bottom of the pot or planter box equal to approx. 1/4 of the container height, then place the actual substrate on top. After watering, water will drain downward, so the roots will not stand in wet soil.

Green roofs and mulch: add 30–40% pumice by volume to green-roof substrates. Spread over the soil surface in a 2–3 cm layer, it acts as mulch: it limits evaporation and makes weed germination more difficult.

Uses

Agro pumice is a versatile soil conditioner and drainage material: it works well as an ingredient in substrates for succulents, cacti, and potted plants, an addition to soil for container-grown vegetables and bedding flowers, a drainage layer in pots, mineral mulch, and a component of green-roof substrates. The manufacturer also recommends it when planting and transplanting ornamental trees and shrubs, including trees in urban areas, and for improving soil structure beneath lawns. Mixed with coco coir and BIGOS soil, it creates a permeable, “breathable” substrate that is difficult to overwater.

Gardener’s tip

If you grow cacti or succulents from seed, sow them in a mixture of pumice, fine sand, and coco coir (1/3 of each), then after emergence cover the surface with a thin layer of pumice alone. This “mineral mulch” keeps the seedlings dry around the crown and significantly limits rotting and algae growth on the substrate.
