Description

A lawn that is simply bound to succeed – around the house, beside flower beds, or on the playground. Uniwersalmix is a carefully composed BIOVITA lawn grass seed mix: slow- and low-growing, fast-tillering, and resistant to foot traffic and unpredictable weather. Fescues create a dense, fine “carpet”, while ryegrasses provide rapid germination and resistance to damage. The 5 kg package is enough for approx. 200 m² of new lawn.

What sets this product apart

Uniwersalmix is a mix deliberately composed by the manufacturer from slow- and low-growing grasses with a strong ability to tiller. This results in a dense, compact lawn that needs mowing less often and quickly fills in minor bare patches. The high proportion of perennial ryegrass (40%) provides fast, even germination and resistance to foot traffic. Italian ryegrass (40% in total) acts as a “starter”: it germinates within a few days and protects the slower-growing species, while the fescues (20%) gradually fill out the turf with fine, soft leaves and tolerate drought and partial shade better.

The seed is of high quality, and the mix is highly resistant to mechanical damage and adverse weather conditions. As the manufacturer emphasises, this gives it a very wide range of applications. It is a good choice if you do not want to worry about the type of soil or amount of sunlight, but simply want a decent, green lawn.

How to use it step by step

Soil preparation: remove weeds (preferably 2–3 weeks beforehand), dig over the soil or loosen the top 10–15 cm with a rake, and remove stones and roots. Mix sand into heavy soils, and compost or humus-rich soil into light soils. Level the surface, lightly compact it with a roller or board, then rake it to create a fine, crumbly structure. You can apply a starter fertiliser (e.g. BIOVITA universal organic fertiliser).

Sowing: sow approx. 25 g/m² (2.5 kg per 100 m²) on a windless day when the soil is at least 8–10°C – in spring from April to May, and in late summer from mid-August to mid-September. For even coverage, divide the seeds into two portions and sow them in a criss-cross pattern, in two perpendicular directions; for overseeding, approx. 15 g/m² is sufficient.

Covering and watering: cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil (0.5–1 cm) by raking shallowly, then lightly roll the area so the seeds make contact with the soil. Water gently every day (twice a day in hot weather), keeping the top layer constantly moist until germination – ryegrass germinates after 7–10 days, and fescues after 2–3 weeks. Do not walk on the sown area.

First mowing: when the grass reaches 8–10 cm, mow it with a sharp blade to a height of approx. 5–6 cm – never remove more than one-third of its height. Subsequent mowing every 7–10 days will thicken the turf. Apply the first fertiliser 4–6 weeks after germination, and begin intensive use of the lawn after 2–3 months.

Uses

Uniwersalmix is intended for general-purpose lawns: around detached houses, beside flower beds, on playgrounds and recreational areas, and near public facilities. It works well both for establishing a new lawn and for overseeding and regenerating thin turf. Suchmix is a better choice for clearly dry, sandy sites, while Cieńmix is better beneath tree canopies and beside north-facing walls; Uniwersalmix is the golden mean for a typical, moderately sunny plot.

Gardener's tip

The most common mistake when sowing grass is sowing too densely “just to be safe”. The seedlings compete with one another, become weaker, and are more prone to disease, while after a year the lawn is thinner than it would have been if the recommended rate had been used. Stick to 25 g/m² (a small handful per square metre) and, instead of adding more seed, ensure consistent moisture during the first 3 weeks. If sowing in autumn, do it no later than mid-September so the grass has time to establish roots before frost.
