What makes this product stand out
Ryegrasses (80%) are at the heart of this mixture – they germinate faster than all other lawn grasses and quickly cover the soil, so the lawn closes up within a few weeks and leaves weeds little chance. They are complemented by fescues: red and chewings fescue provide density and fine, soft blades, while tall fescue (10%) provides deep rooting and better tolerance of dry periods.
BIOVITA is a Polish producer of growing media and seeds, and Uniwersalmix is its most versatile mixture: certified seed, resistance to mechanical damage and weather conditions, and slow-growing varieties, meaning less mowing during the season. The 10 kg bag is an option for those establishing a larger lawn or overseeding several areas every year and preferring to buy a supply at once.
How to use it step by step
Soil preparation: Weed the area, remove stones and roots, dig to spade depth and level with a rake. On heavy soils, add sand; on very light soils, add compost or mature topsoil. Leave the soil for 1–2 weeks to settle, then rake it again and lightly roll it.
Sowing: Sow on a windless day when the soil is moist but not muddy. Divide the seeds into two portions and sow them crosswise (once lengthwise and once across the area) by hand or with a spreader, at a rate of approx. 2.5–3 kg per 100 m². When overseeding gaps in an existing lawn, approx. 1–1.5 kg per 100 m² is sufficient.
Covering and watering: Cover the seeds shallowly (approx. 0.5–1 cm) by gently raking them in, then roll or tread the area to ensure good soil contact. Water with a fine stream every day so that the top layer remains constantly moist until emergence (usually 7–21 days, depending on the species and weather).
First mowing: When the grass reaches approx. 8–10 cm, mow it for the first time to a height of 5–6 cm using sharp blades. Afterwards, mow regularly, removing no more than one-third of the blade height. You can apply the first lawn fertiliser 4–6 weeks after emergence.
Uses
Uniwersalmix is suitable for a new domestic lawn, a recreational lawn (an area for children and dogs to play), edges of flower beds and paths, and renovating and overseeding sparse lawns – the fast-germinating ryegrasses are excellent for filling bare patches. It also works well on lawns around public facilities, where resistance to foot traffic is important. For very dry, sandy positions, choose Suchmix instead, and under tree canopies choose Cieńmix.
Gardener’s tip
Do not sow “by eye” by hand in a single pass – this almost always results in strips of dense and sparse grass. Weigh out a portion of seeds for 10 m² (approx. 250–300 g), mix it in a bucket with a similar volume of dry sand, and sow half lengthwise and half across the area. The sand shows where you have already sown, helping you achieve an even rate.
