Description

A drainage bag for the whole garden and all your pots. Agro horticultural expanded clay is a lightweight ceramic aggregate fired at high temperature: hard, porous pellets with a fraction of 8–16 mm that do not break down, rot or alter soil pH. Spread across the bottom of a pot or flower bed, they drain excess water; mixed into soil, they loosen and aerate it; and scattered over the surface, they act as decorative mulch. The large 45 l pack is enough for drainage in several dozen pots or beneath a flower bed and hedge. Approved for organic farming.

What makes this product stand out

Expanded clay is made from clay that expands and sinters into pellets in a rotary kiln at temperatures above 1000°C, forming a hard outer shell and porous interior. The result is a material as light as cork yet as durable as ceramic: it does not become waterlogged throughout, crumble under the weight of soil, decompose or freeze into a solid mass. Moisture stored in the pores is released slowly, helping expanded clay stabilise humidity both in pots and in flower beds.

The 8–16 mm fraction is the most versatile size: large enough to form a permeable drainage layer without falling through pot holes, yet fine enough to look attractive as mulch. The 45 l BIOVITA bag is far more economical than small packs - it is an ideal choice for repotting an entire collection, creating flower beds, planting trees and installing green roofs.

How to use it step by step

Preparation: you can use expanded clay straight from the bag. Before using it in hydroponics or in pots without drainage holes, rinse it with water to remove ceramic dust that could cloud the water and settle on the roots.

Drainage in pots: spread a 3–5 cm layer of expanded clay over the bottom of the pot (up to approx. 1/4 of the height in large pots), cover it with substrate and plant as usual. In a pot without a drainage hole, the drainage layer protects the roots from standing in water. In the garden: spread 5–10 cm of expanded clay at the bottom of a hole for a tree or shrub, and in heavy clay soil, also mix it into the backfill soil.

Substrate component: add approx. 10–20% expanded clay by volume to heavy garden or potting soil and mix it in. The substrate will become lighter and better aerated and will not compact into a crust. In substrates for green roofs and beneath lawns on clay soil, expanded clay serves as a drainage layer.

Mulch: spread a 2–4 cm layer of expanded clay around potted plants and on flower beds. It limits water evaporation, inhibits weed germination and makes it harder for fungus gnats to lay eggs in moist soil. Water through the mulch layer - expanded clay allows water to pass through freely.

Applications

Agro expanded clay 8–16 mm is primarily used for drainage in pots and planters - for houseplants, citrus plants, aroids and succulents - as well as drainage beneath trees, shrubs and flower beds on heavy clay soils. It works well as a substrate component for vegetables and ornamental plants, mineral mulch in pots and flower beds, a medium in hydroponics and bottom-watering systems, and, according to the manufacturer, also when planting trees in urban areas, on lawns and in green roof systems. It is reusable - after rinsing, you can use it again.

Gardener's tip

Instead of conventional drainage at the bottom of the pot, try "reverse" watering: place the pots on a tray filled with expanded clay and pour water directly onto the pellets. As the water evaporates, it increases the humidity around the leaves, while the roots do not come into contact with standing water - a simple way to keep calatheas, ferns and orchids happy in a dry, heated home.
