What makes this product stand out
Coconut chips are large pieces of coconut shell – unlike fine fiber (coco peat), they do not compact and decompose very slowly, so the substrate remains airy for years. At the same time, each piece acts like a sponge: it absorbs water and gradually releases it to the roots, resulting in less frequent watering and a lower risk of overwatering. The natural, slightly acidic pH (5.5–6.5) suits most potted plants.
The briquette form is highly economical: a 4.5 kg block contains approx. 50 l of ready-to-use material, so it takes up only a fraction of the space required by loose-packed chips and costs less to transport. How to use step by step
Soaking: Place the block in a large container (approx. 70 l – a bathtub, large crate or wheelbarrow) and pour in approx. 18 l of water, preferably lukewarm. Wait until the briquette absorbs the water and swells; if necessary, break it apart by hand and add a little water until all the chips are loose and moist. You can also soak only a broken-off piece and store the rest of the block dry.
Loosening and rinsing: Transfer the loosened chips and drain them. For sensitive plants (orchids, carnivorous plants and seedlings), rinse them 1–2 times with clean water – coconut material may contain natural salts, and rinsing eliminates this issue.
Application: For orchids, use the chips on their own or with bark and charcoal. For monstera, philodendrons and other aroids, mix them with soil at a ratio of approx. 1:3–1:4 (20–30% chips). As mulch, spread a 2–3 cm layer over the surface of the substrate in pots or in a terrarium.
Watering: The chips store water, so water less frequently and check the moisture level with your finger. Plants grown in pure coconut material require regular fertilization – coconut contains no nutrients, so feed them every 2–3 waterings with fertilizer at half the recommended dose.
Applications
Coconut chips are the basis of orchid substrate (phalaenopsis, cattleyas and dendrobiums) and substrate for epiphytic plants, an excellent soil-loosening component for monsteras, philodendrons, alocasias and other aroids, as well as for palms and exotic plants that do not tolerate compacted substrate. They work well as mulch in pots to limit evaporation, in hydroponics and soilless cultivation, and as safe bedding in terrariums and aquariums. Combined with perlite and coconut fiber, they create a lightweight substrate for rooting cuttings of exotic plants.
Gardener's tip
Not soaking the entire block right away? Break off a piece with a saw or large knife while it is dry – this is much easier than dividing a wet block – and soak only as much as you need (approx. 4 l of water per 1 kg of briquette). The rest will keep for years in a dry place. If you are buying chips for orchids, soak them for 24 hours before use in water with a little orchid fertilizer – the coconut will become “charged” with nutrients instead of drawing them from the first watering.
