The buds are intensely red or orange, while the flowers turn yellow from the bottom as they open, giving the spike a natural two-coloured gradient. Flowering lasts for many weeks, and a single mature clump can produce a dozen or more stems.

Plants grown from seed usually flower in the second year, sometimes the third, and become more impressive with each season. Red hot poker is long-lived and, in a good location—warm and sunny, with well-drained soil—grows in the same clump for many years. The flowers are eagerly visited by bumblebees and butterflies.

Growing step by step

Sowing (April–June, under cover): sow the seeds in trays filled with a light, well-drained growing medium, covering them with a layer of about 3 mm.
