In nature, it is initially an upright tree 4–10 m tall, while older specimens climb trees, extending their shoots to 30 m.

Growth and development

The species grows quickly: a young plant produces several new, increasingly larger leaves during the growing season, and in the ground in a warm climate it reaches tree size within a dozen or so years. The trunk thickens with age to about 15 cm in diameter, and without pruning the plant develops several trunks and a broad, rounded crown. In a pot, growth is slower, and its height can easily be maintained at 1.5–3 m through pruning. It is long-lived – garden specimens several decades old are known.

Flowering and fruiting

The flowers are green and fleshy, measuring 1.5–3 cm in diameter – exceptionally large for the aralia family – and are gathered in compound umbels growing from the side of the shoot. The petals fuse into a leathery cap (calyptra), which falls off as the flower opens, revealing 30–70 densely arranged stamens. The plump buds resemble mallets, hence the common name. The fruits are spherical, fleshy drupes measuring 2–3.5 cm in diameter.

Origin and natural habitat

The species' range includes northeastern India and Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, as well as southern China (Yunnan, Tibet). It grows in moist mountain forests at elevations of 900–1700 m above sea level, where it is an independent young tree and later becomes a climber that ascends the trunks of taller trees. The warm, monsoonal climate with mild winters explains its high water requirements.

Growing requirements

A bright position sheltered from intense midday sun is best; young plants prefer partial shade, while older ones tolerate full sun when provided with sufficient moisture. Soil: fertile, humus-rich and well-drained. Water regularly, keeping the substrate evenly moist but not wet; the plant does not tolerate drought or waterlogging. In summer, it is worth misting the leaves with soft water and fertilizing every 2–4 weeks with fertilizer for foliage plants.

The species tolerates only light frosts down to about -2°C; outdoors, it overwinters in USDA zones 10–11 (some sources give zone 9 with protection). In Europe's temperate climate, it is grown in a container: from late spring to early autumn on a terrace, and in winter in a bright room at a temperature of 10–18°C with reduced watering. It can also be grown year-round as a houseplant.

Ornamental use

In Mediterranean and subtropical gardens, it is planted as a tropical-looking tree, often trained to a single trunk, or used as a dense green screen. In cooler regions of Europe, it is a valued container plant for spacious interiors, conservatories and winter gardens. It responds well to formative pruning, while its sap – as with other members of the aralia family – may irritate the skin and is mildly toxic to pets.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0939/2649/0440/files/Nasiona-Szeflery-PueckleraSchefflera-Pueckleri.webp?v=1790068021
