It was described only in 2021; previously, all traveller's trees were classified as a single species, Ravenala madagascariensis. Despite its palm-like appearance, it is not a palm but a relative of the bird of paradise plant. It forms a short trunk with a fan of large, dark green leaves arranged in a single plane and produces suckers. It owes its “orange” name to the orange-red edges of the leaf sheaths, contrasting with the waxy white stripes on the petioles.

Growth and development

In nature, plants reach 6–10 m in height, while the trunk is usually 20–30 cm in diameter - making it smaller and more compact than the common eastern form. The fan consists of 9–22 living leaves with petioles 3–4.6 m long and blades measuring approximately 174–210 × 72–86 cm. Young plants initially grow without a visible trunk; it emerges after several years. In warm conditions, growth is rapid - even several leaves per year. The species is long-lived and regenerates through suckers.

Flowering and fruiting

A mature plant bears 4–6 inflorescences at the same time, measuring approximately 70–90 × 90–100 cm and composed of 10–14 boat-shaped bracts with a purple stripe along the edge. Each bract conceals 8–10 whitish flowers measuring 26–31 cm in length. In nature, flowering occurs at the end of the year. The fruit is a woody capsule 9–11 cm long; old infructescences remain on the plant for several years. The seeds are dark brown and surrounded - as in all Ravenala - by an ultramarine-blue aril. The flowers are pollinated by, among others, lemurs.

Origin and natural habitat

Ravenala agatheae occurs exclusively in northwestern Madagascar - from the surroundings of Antsirañana (Diego Suarez), through the Ambanja area, where it is most abundant, to Mahajanga Province and the Melaky region. It inhabits seasonally dry, warm coastal habitats on low-elevation slopes (the type specimen was collected at 30 m above sea level) - conditions different from the humid forests of the eastern coast, the home of R. madagascariensis, which explains its greater tolerance of periodic drought.

Cultivation requirements

It needs plenty of light - full sun or bright partial shade; only young plants should be protected from intense sunlight. The optimum temperature is 22–32 °C; the species does not tolerate frost, and temperatures below approximately 5 °C damage the leaves - outdoors, it grows only in USDA zones 10–11.

In Europe's temperate climate, it is a container plant: in summer, it can be placed outdoors in a warm, sheltered spot protected from wind (wind shreds the leaf blades), while before cold weather arrives it should be moved back into a bright, warm greenhouse, conservatory or sunny interior.
