For those who want something in their garden that almost nobody else has yet.

Heat and flavor

Peppapeach Stripey belongs to the medium heat class: it is distinctly spicy but not painful, with a heat level similar to jalapeño and classic ají peppers. No exact Scoville measurements are available yet - it is a very young variety - so we describe its heat as its breeders do.

The flavor is sweet and fruity, inherited from Sugar Rush Peach, one of the tastiest peppers of the Capsicum baccatum species. The thick, juicy, peppadew-style flesh means the fruits can be eaten whole and raw.

Fruit and plant appearance

The pods of 'Peppapeach Stripey' are somewhat round, resembling peppadew peppers. They ripen from green to peach-colored with red stripes and speckles, and the pattern is slightly different on each fruit. Since the variety is not yet fully stabilized, some fruits may develop without stripes or turn completely red - this is part of its character, not a defect.

The plant is tall and vigorous: in good conditions, it exceeds 180 cm and requires staking. It is also highly productive, with pods hanging densely along the stems. Those who enjoy shaping plants can also grow it as a chili bonsai.

Origin and history

The variety's history began in 2012-2013, when Chris Fowler selected a round-fruited variant from Sugar Rush Peach, initially named "Peachadew" and later "Peppapeach". The striped form appeared around 2021 through the work of Matt Layton and Rich Blood, and stabilization was completed in 2024. It is one of the newest varieties in our range.

Growing requirements in a temperate climate

Like most Capsicum baccatum, Peppapeach Stripey tolerates cooler nights better than habanero or other peppers from the chinense species, which is a major advantage in Europe's temperate climate. However, it is a late variety - the fruits ripen toward the end of the season - so in practice it performs best in a greenhouse, polytunnel, or a very warm, sheltered position. The tall bush needs a large pot or fertile soil in the ground, as well as a sturdy stake.

Culinary uses

The round, thick-walled pods are ideal for stuffing with cheese and pickling in the style of peppadew peppers. They are also excellent in salsas and salads, where their sweetness and moderate heat balance acidic and salty ingredients. The striped fruits also add a decorative touch to any plate.
