It forms a thick, silvery-gray, water-storing base from which several branched stems emerge, densely covered with pairs of sharp spines. Glossy, dark green leaves 3–8 cm long develop at the ends of the stems, along with large white flowers with a pink blush in autumn.

Growth and development characteristics

In nature, Pachypodium saundersii is a low shrub reaching 0.5–1.5 m in height; in a container, it remains smaller and can fit in a pot 20–30 cm in diameter for years. Among pachypodiums, it is considered a relatively fast-growing species: young plants can double in size in a single season, while older specimens grow more slowly but steadily thicken. During the cooler, dry season, it sheds its leaves and enters dormancy lasting about 3 months, then produces new leaves in spring.

Flowering and fruiting

The flowers are funnel-shaped, white with a pink or purple tint, delicately scented, and borne at the stem tips. In its native habitat, the plant flowers from autumn to early winter; in cultivation, it usually flowers in late summer and autumn, often on leafless stems. After pollination, two horn-shaped follicles develop, containing numerous small seeds equipped with a tuft of hairs that aids wind dispersal.

Origin and natural habitat

The species is native to southeastern Africa: it occurs in South Africa (KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Limpopo), Eswatini, Mozambique and southern Zimbabwe, with its center of distribution in the Lebombo Mountains and the adjacent lowveld lowlands. It grows in full sun among rocks and in rock crevices, in dry, warm scrubland where most rain falls during the hot summer and winter is dry.

Cultivation requirements

The plant needs the brightest, sunniest position possible; in summer, it thrives outdoors in full sun, or indoors on a south-facing windowsill. The substrate must be mineral and very well drained, such as a cactus mix with a large addition of pumice or gravel, and the pot must have drainage holes. During the growing season, water thoroughly, but only after the substrate has dried out completely, and feed every 4–8 weeks with diluted cactus fertilizer. The optimal growing temperature is 20–35 °C.

When the leaves fall in autumn, reduce watering almost to zero. In winter, the plant should be kept in a bright, dry place at a temperature of 10–15 °C; it tolerates around 5 °C for short periods, but in a moist substrate, cold quickly leads to rot. The species is not frost-hardy (USDA zone 10), so in the temperate climate of Europe it is grown exclusively in a container. Repot every 2–3 years in spring. The entire plant is poisonous, and its sap may irritate the skin.

Ornamental use

Pachypodium saundersii is a classic collector's plant and one of the most rewarding species to grow in bonsai style: its caudex, spiny stems and the contrast between the foliage and bare, flowering branches provide an attractive appearance throughout the year.
