In Ecuador and Colombia, it is known as tauso. Over time, it produces woody, densely hairy stems, large three-lobed leaves and pink flowers hanging from an exceptionally long floral column.

Growth and development characteristics

The growth rate is very fast - in favourable conditions, the stems extend by several metres in a season, while mature specimens reach 5–10 m; according to some sources, they can even reach 20 m in length. The stems climb using tendrils and become woody at the base with age. The leaves are lobed, about 6.5–13.5 cm long and up to 15.5 cm wide, softly hairy underneath - hence the species name, meaning “felted”. With suitable overwintering, the plant is perennial and regrows its canopy every year.

Flowering and fruiting

The flowers are solitary and pendulous, with a tubular hypanthium and pink petals; the corona ranges in colour from brownish to purple. The most distinctive feature is the exceptionally elongated floral column (androgynophore), reaching up to 11 cm and extending the stamens and pistil far beyond the corolla - one of the longest in the entire genus. In nature, the flowers are pollinated by long-billed hummingbirds. After pollination, yellowish fruits about 8–10 cm long develop, with aromatic, sweet-and-sour, edible pulp. When grown without natural pollinators, fruit set usually requires hand pollination.

Origin and natural habitat

The species occurs in the Andes of south-western Colombia and Ecuador, where it inhabits cool, humid cloud forests and their edges at elevations of approximately 2200–3600 m above sea level. Temperatures there remain moderate throughout the year, with high air humidity. As a result, the plant tolerates cool conditions better than lowland tropical passionflowers, but responds poorly to heat and dry air.

Cultivation requirements

It grows best in a sunny position, although young plants should initially be grown in light partial shade, and in hot, dry locations some midday shade is beneficial. The growing medium should be well-drained, humus-rich and consistently slightly moist - during the growing season, the plant has high water requirements. As a fast-growing vine, it needs sturdy support. It tolerates only light, short-lived frosts (approximately down to -5 °C); in more severe frost, the leaves and stems die back, although the plant may resprout from the base in spring.

In Europe's temperate climate, growing it in a large container is the safest option; place it outdoors from late spring to autumn and overwinter it in a bright, cool room (about 5–12 °C) with limited watering. Only in the warmest regions of Europe is growing it in the ground possible, against a sheltered wall and with thick protection around the stem bases.

Ornamental uses

Thanks to its rapid growth, large leaves and striking, pendulous flowers, this species is suitable as a vine for a greenhouse, conservatory, bright veranda or summer terrace, where it quickly covers trellises and pergolas. It is an excellent choice for passionflower collectors and enthusiasts of Andean plants seeking something less typical than the popular Passiflora caerulea, with the possibility of harvesting their own tauso fruits.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0939/2649/0440/files/Nasiona-Meczennicy-CoactilisPassiflora-Coactilis-1.webp?v=1790068867
