Young plants are almost spherical; with age, they become barrel-shaped, while old specimens develop the form of a short, massive column with a diameter of 50–80 cm and a typical height of 1–2 m. The stem has 15–28 ribs with dense, reddish-brown spines; the largest, hook-shaped central spine measures up to 8–10 cm.

Growth and development

The species grows slowly to moderately: plants several years old are small spheres, and they develop a barrel shape after a dozen or so years. In nature, mature specimens usually measure 60–120 cm, with record specimens reaching 3 m; their lifespan is estimated at 50–130 years. Old plants lean southward because the intense afternoon sun slows growth on the sun-exposed side - hence the name “compass cactus”. In a pot, the plant remains smaller and retains its spherical form for a long time.

Flowering and fruiting

Flowers appear in summer and early autumn (in nature, from July to September) in a ring around the top of mature plants. They are funnel-shaped, 4–7 cm in diameter, and yellow, orange, coppery or red, often with a darker stripe on the petals. After flowering, yellow, fleshy fruits up to 5 cm long develop; they are edible and remain on the plant for more than a year. In cultivation, flowering usually takes a dozen or so years because Ferocactus plants bloom only after reaching a considerable size.

Origin and natural habitat

Ferocactus wislizeni is native to the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. It occurs in Arizona, New Mexico, western Texas, and the states of Sonora, Sinaloa and Chihuahua. It inhabits the Sonoran Desert, dry scrubland and grasslands at elevations of 100–1600 m above sea level, on gravelly alluvial fans and sandy valleys. The climate features hot summers with monsoon rains and dry winters with brief frosts. On the IUCN Red List, the species is classified as Vulnerable (VU).

Cultivation requirements

Full sun and a very well-drained, mineral-rich growing medium are essential - use cactus soil mixed half and half with coarse sand, pumice or grit. From spring to autumn, water thoroughly, but only after the growing medium has dried out completely (every 1–2 weeks during hot weather). In winter, at a temperature of 5–12 °C, the plant rests without water. In nature, it tolerates brief frosts of -9 to -15 °C, but only when the growing medium is dry; therefore, in the temperate climate of Europe, it is grown in a container and overwintered in a bright, cool and dry room.

Fertilize 2–3 times per season with a cactus fertilizer low in nitrogen. A deep pot with drainage benefits the roots, while plants moved outdoors in spring should be gradually acclimatized to sunlight.

Ornamental uses

Wislizen's Cactus is a classic desert cactus for collectors: symmetrical and heavily armed, with a beautiful contrast between its red spines and green skin. It works well as a solitary plant in a heavy pot on a sunny terrace, and in warmer regions of Europe in dry gravel gardens; in a greenhouse, it grows into an impressive barrel over the years. Because of its hook-shaped spines, it should be kept away from walkways and children.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0939/2649/0440/files/Nasiona-Kaktusa-WislizenaFerocactus-wislizeni.webp?v=1790069198
