In nature, it forms branched specimens reaching 4–6 m in height, with stems growing to around 2 m long while measuring only 5–8 cm in diameter. The stems are covered with 20–30 low, blunt ribs, while dark areoles produce dense, golden-yellow spines that give the plant a warm, luminous appearance.

Growth and Development Characteristics

Young plants grow as single, slender columns and only begin to branch after several years - usually above approximately 2 m in height in nature, but much lower or not at all in a pot. The growth rate is moderate: under good conditions, a stem grows by several to a dozen centimetres per year. Each areole produces 12–15 central spines up to 1.5 cm long and 20–30 thinner radial spines. In the flowering zone of older stems, long, golden bristles up to 7 cm long appear, forming a distinctive, fluffy “collar”.

Flowering and Fruiting

The flowers open at night and reach 7.5 cm in length; the flower tube is brownish-red to green, covered with dark wool, while the tepals are white or slightly pink. The fruits are barrel-shaped, up to 4 cm in diameter, initially green, later reddish and densely hairy. Only mature, tall specimens flower, so in amateur cultivation the spines remain the main ornamental feature.

Origin and Natural Habitat

The species is endemic to Peru, where it occurs in the regions of Cajamarca and Ancash, on dry, rocky slopes of Andean valleys with a long dry season and intense sunlight. The genus name commemorates the botanist August Weberbauer, a researcher of the flora of the Peruvian Andes, while the species epithet honours Hildegard Winter, Ritter’s sister and the owner of a cactus nursery. On the IUCN Red List, the species is classified as Least Concern (LC).

Cultivation Requirements

The Winterianus Cactus needs a very bright, sunny position - only in full light do the spines develop their intense colour and the stems remain compact. The substrate must be mineral and well-drained: coarse sand, gravel or pumice with a small addition of compost, in a pot with drainage holes. During the growing season, water thoroughly, but only after the substrate has dried out completely; in winter, withhold water almost entirely. Fertilise sparingly, using a cactus fertiliser with a low nitrogen content.

In Europe’s temperate climate, the species is grown in containers that can be placed outdoors in summer in a location protected from prolonged rainfall. Overwinter it in a bright, cool and dry room at approximately 8–15 °C. The plant tolerates short-lived, dry frosts down to approximately -6 °C, but it can remain outdoors in the ground over winter only in USDA Zone 9 and warmer.

Ornamental Use

With its slender, densely spined columns with a golden sheen, Weberbauerocereus winterianus looks excellent as a specimen plant in a large pot, on a sunny terrace or in a collection of columnar cacti in a greenhouse. In regions with a Mediterranean climate, it can grow in rock gardens, where it eventually forms an impressive, multi-stemmed clump.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0939/2649/0440/files/Nasiona-Kaktusa-WinterianusWeberbauerocereus-Winterianus-3.webp?v=1790068422
