From a short, massive trunk up to 2 m tall and 30–60 cm in diameter, several dozen (up to 90) upright, blue-green, waxy, woolly shoots emerge, each with 8–11 rounded ribs. The shoots are 12–20 cm in diameter, and from the white, felted areoles grow a flattened, blackish central spine up to 10 cm long and 6–12 lateral spines measuring 2–3 cm.

Growth and development

Young plants grow as a single, erect column and only begin to branch after reaching approximately 2 m in height, gradually forming a crown resembling a giant candelabra. The growth rate is moderate: in a container in a temperate climate, the column reaches several to several dozen centimetres after a few years, while in the ground in a warm climate it grows noticeably faster. The species is long-lived, and in the Tehuacán Valley it forms entire cactus forests known as cardonales.

Flowering and fruiting

Flowers appear only on large, mature plants, laterally near the shoot tips. The growing medium should be mineral-based, very well drained and close to neutral in pH. From spring to the end of summer, water only after the medium has completely dried out; from the end of September, reduce watering, and keep the plant almost completely dry in winter. It can be grown outdoors only in USDA zones 10 and warmer; in temperate European climates, grow it in a deep, sturdy container - outdoors on a sunny terrace in summer, and from autumn to spring in a bright, cool and dry room.

Ornamental use

In succulent collections, Pachycereus weberi is valued for its bluish-green, thick columns and contrasting spines - its architectural appearance is already evident in a young, solitary column.
