It grows singly, forming a spherical, grayish-green stem that usually reaches 25–40 cm in diameter in cultivation. The species is prized for its spines: the lowest of the four central spines is broadly flattened, ridged and hook-shaped, ranging in color from red to amber. Hence the Latin name (latus - broad, spina - spine) and the common name Broad-spined Cactus.

Growth and development characteristics

The number of ribs increases with age: from 8–15 in young plants to approximately 21–23 in mature specimens. Each areole produces 6–15 radial spines up to 2–2.5 cm long and usually 4 central spines up to 4–5 cm long, of which the lower one is 4–9 mm wide. The species grows slowly - only several millimeters in diameter per year in a pot - and remains compact, making it suitable for many years of container cultivation. In nature, old specimens reach 30–40 cm, exceptionally up to one meter in height. The plant lives for decades.

Flowering and fruiting

Ferocactus latispinus is one of the few ferocacti that flower at a young age - the first flowers appear when plants reach a diameter of approximately 15 cm. Funnel-shaped flowers measuring 3.5–4 cm long, pink, purple, violet or yellowish, often with a darker stripe, emerge in a ring around the apex. The flowering season is unusual: late autumn and early winter, so plants moved into cool conditions too early often fail to develop buds. After pollination (a second plant is needed), oval, scaly fruits up to 2.5 cm long develop.

Origin and natural habitat

The species is endemic to Mexico. The substrate must be mineral-based and very well-drained, with a high proportion of pumice, gravel or coarse sand. In spring and summer, water thoroughly but only after the substrate has completely dried out (every 7–14 days), and fertilize 2–4 times per season with diluted cactus fertilizer.

In winter, the plant rests: with dry soil, it tolerates brief drops to approximately -4°C, while safe overwintering temperatures are 5–10°C. In the temperate climate of Europe, it does not overwinter outdoors in the ground (minimum USDA zone 9), so it is grown in a container - outdoors on a terrace in summer, and in a bright, cool and dry room in winter. Cold combined with moisture risks root rot.

Ornamental uses

Ferocactus latispinus is a classic cactus-collection plant: decorative all year round thanks to its contrasting spines, compact and undemanding. In regions with mild winters, it is sometimes planted in rock gardens and xerophytic gardens.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0939/2649/0440/files/Nasiona-Kaktusa-SzerokokolcowegoFerocactus-Latispinus-5.webp?v=1790068644
