It differs from most ferocacti through its strong tendency to branch: instead of remaining a single barrel, the plant produces numerous offsets and, over the course of decades, forms extensive, dense clumps composed of hundreds of stems. An individual stem is spherical to club-shaped, usually 8–16 cm in diameter, with 8 sharp, tuberculate ribs. Each areole produces 4–7 straight, reddish-brown central spines up to 6 cm long, as well as 10–14 lighter radial spines.

Growth and development characteristics

The Robustus Cactus grows slowly and steadily. Young plants remain solitary balls for their first few years, and branching begins in specimens several centimetres in diameter. In nature, mature colonies reach approximately 1 m in height and even up to 5 m in diameter, although forming such a clump takes many decades. The species is long-lived; in cultivation, it forms a clump several dozen centimetres in diameter after a dozen or so years.

Flowering and fruiting

The flowers are funnel-shaped and yellow, often with a reddish coating on the outer tepals, and measure 3–4 cm across. They appear at the stem tips in summer, and under favourable conditions flowering may continue into autumn, usually irregularly and in successive waves. In Mexico, peak flowering occurs in July, while mature fruits - spherical, fleshy and yellow, containing an average of several hundred seeds - are observed in autumn.

Origin and natural habitat

The species is native to the Tehuacán Valley east of Mexico City, in the states of Puebla and Veracruz. The plant inhabits dry xerophytic scrub and rocky slopes at elevations from approximately 700 to over 2000 m above sea level, in a semi-warm climate with summer rainfall and a dry, cool winter. The IUCN classifies it as Vulnerable (VU).

Cultivation requirements

Ferocactus robustus is considered one of the easier ferocacti to grow. It needs a bright, sunny position, although it does not require full sun all day. The substrate must be very well drained and mineral-based, such as cactus soil mixed with coarse sand, gravel or pumice. During the growing season, water thoroughly, but only after the substrate has dried out completely; the plant tolerates drought extremely well, while stagnant water is its greatest enemy. The optimal growing temperature is 20–35°C. In winter, it requires a cool, bright and dry dormancy at approximately 5–12°C, which encourages flowering in the following season.

The plant tolerates brief frosts down to approximately -4°C without damage when the substrate is dry, so in cooler regions of Europe it is grown in containers placed outdoors from late spring to autumn. Fertilise sparingly, and use a flat, wide container to suit the plant's clumping habit.

Ornamental use

The Robustus Cactus is a collector's plant valued for the contrast between its light green body and colourful spines, as well as for its cushion-like habit, which most barrel cacti cannot achieve. In warmer regions of Europe, it works well in dry rock gardens and succulent beds, while in temperate climates it makes an attractive feature in greenhouses, on windowsills and on summer terraces.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0939/2649/0440/files/Nasiona-Kaktusa-RobustusaFerocactus-robustus.webp?v=1790068843
