A single head reaches up to 15 cm in height and 5–7.5 cm in diameter. It is distinguished by a rare ability among cacti to divide its apex into two: a single sphere develops into a pair of twin heads resembling an owl's gaze. Hence the trade name “Owl’s Eyes”.

Growth and development characteristics

The stems are spherical to shortly cylindrical, bluish or dark green, and slightly broader at the top. The tubercles are pyramid-shaped and arranged spirally in 13–21 rows. Each areole produces 3–5 radial spines and no central spines; the lower ones may reach 25 mm, and in some specimens even more than 5 cm. Young spines are cream-coloured with brownish tips, becoming chalk white with age. White, woolly tomentum forms between the tubercles, while damaged tissue exudes milky sap. Further divisions of the apex lead to the formation of clumps that may reach 50 cm or more in width after 12–15 years.

Flowering and fruiting

Flowers appear in spring and summer, forming a ring just below the top of the head on growth from the previous season. They are funnel-shaped, approximately 18–25 mm long, creamy white with a reddish-brown central stripe on the petals. After flowering, elongated, club-shaped fruits develop in an intense red colour, containing small brown seeds. The red fruits among the white spines provide additional ornamental value.

Origin and natural habitat

The subspecies occurs in Oaxaca, around Nejapa and the Totolapan River valley, at an altitude of 850–1650 m above sea level. It grows in dry tropical deciduous forests and xerophilous scrublands, where the rainy season alternates with a long dry season. According to Plants of the World Online (Kew), the taxon is treated as a synonym of the broadly circumscribed species Mammillaria karwinskiana, which has Least Concern (LC) status on the IUCN Red List.

Growing requirements

The plant needs as much light as possible - ideally at least 4 hours of direct sunlight per day - to maintain its compact habit and white spination. The substrate should be very well drained and mineral-based: ready-made cactus soil with the addition of perlite, pumice or grit. The cactus is not frost-hardy; with completely dry soil, it can briefly tolerate approximately -4°C, corresponding to USDA zone 9b. In Poland and central Europe, it is grown in a pot and can be placed on a sunny balcony in summer.

During the growing season, water thoroughly, but only after the substrate has dried out completely; excess moisture can cause root rot. In winter, it requires a cool (approximately 7–12°C), bright and dry rest period, which encourages subsequent flowering. From spring until the end of summer, cactus and succulent fertiliser may be applied; fertilisation should be stopped in winter. Fast-growing clumps should be repotted every 2–3 years into a slightly larger pot.

Ornamental uses

Mammillaria karwinskiana subsp. nejapensis is an attractive plant for windowsills, greenhouses and cactus collections.
