The stem is initially spherical, becoming cylindrical with age, usually reaching 8–9 cm, and in old specimens up to 20 cm in height with a diameter of 8–12 cm; over time, the plant produces offsets and forms clumps. Spirally arranged, four-sided tubercles contain milky sap. Its distinguishing feature is usually four stiff, cross-arranged central spines, pinkish-brown with black tips, with the lower one clearly the longest (0.8–2 cm); radial spines are usually absent.

Growth and Development Characteristics

Mammillaria carnea grows at a moderate rate: young plants reach flowering size after several seasons, while a mature specimen fills a sizeable container within a few years. Spine development is highly variable – individual plants differ in the number, length and colour of their spines, so two specimens from the same collection may look completely different.

Flowering and Fruiting

The flowers of Mammillaria carnea are funnel-shaped and small – 1.5–2 cm long and 1.2–1.5 cm in diameter – appearing in spring in a ring around the stem tip. They are most often flesh-pink (hence the species name), more rarely almost white or creamy yellow. After pollination, pear-shaped, bright red fruits develop and decorate the plant for a long time. Abundant flowering requires full light and a cool, dry winter dormancy.

Origin and Natural Habitat

Mammillaria carnea occurs across an area extending from Veracruz and Puebla to Guerrero and Oaxaca, at elevations of 500–2000 m above sea level. It grows on plains and slopes in dry deciduous forests and xerophytic scrub, together with columnar cacti. Described in 1837 by Ludwig Pfeiffer; it has Least Concern (LC) status in the IUCN Red List.

Cultivation Requirements

In cultivation, Mammillaria carnea is one of the easier mammillarias to grow. It needs the brightest possible position with several hours of direct sunlight – strong light enhances the spines and promotes flowering. The substrate must be very free-draining and mineral-based, such as cactus soil mixed with gravel or pumice. From spring to autumn, water thoroughly, but only after the substrate has completely dried out, as the species is prone to rot. In winter, keep the plant almost completely dry in a bright, cool place at a temperature of 8–12 °C. Its frost resistance is low (USDA zone 9b), so in temperate European climates it is a container plant that should be overwintered under cover.

In summer, the pot can be placed on a balcony or in the garden, protected from prolonged rain. During the growing season, apply diluted cactus fertiliser with a low nitrogen content every few weeks, and plant older clumps in shallow, wide containers.

Ornamental Uses

Mammillaria carnea is a classic collector's and windowsill plant: it remains small, looks neat all year round, and in spring rewards growers with a ring of pink flowers and red fruits.
