Its stems grow up to 15 cm tall and 8 cm in diameter, while the entire surface is almost completely concealed beneath a dense covering of chalk-white spines and white wool emerging from the axils of the tubercles. This snow-white “coat” is what makes the plant stand out in any collection.

Growth and development characteristics

The plant usually grows singly, but with age it may produce offsets at the base or side of the stem and form small clumps. The stem is shaped like a flattened sphere and eventually elongates into a short cylinder with a slightly sunken apex. The grey-green, spirally arranged tubercles do not contain latex. Each areole produces 15–26 short radial spines (2–4 mm) and 2–4 central spines (2–3 mm), white or cream-coloured with brownish tips. Growth is slow.

Flowering and fruiting

Flowers appear from late spring and form a regular ring around the top of the stem. They are small, about 7–8 mm long, and vary by subspecies from deep carmine to purplish-pink. After flowering, club-shaped, pink to red fruits develop, containing light brown seeds that further decorate the plant.

Origin and natural habitat

The species occurs in the Mexican states of Guerrero, Oaxaca, Puebla, Colima and Chiapas, at elevations of approximately 500–2400 m above sea level. It grows in limestone rock crevices, on vertical cliffs and in places with a thin layer of humus, within the range of tropical deciduous forests and temperate forests.

Cultivation requirements

It thrives best in full sun or in a bright location with several hours of direct sunlight per day. It requires very well-drained cactus soil with at least 50% mineral material (grit, pumice, expanded clay) and a small amount of humus. It is not frost-hardy - it corresponds to USDA 9b–11b zones; when completely dry, it can briefly tolerate temperatures dropping to approximately -4 to -5°C, but in cultivation it is better not to expose it to frost.

In the climate of Central Europe, it is grown in a pot: in summer it can be kept on a balcony or in a greenhouse, while it spends the winter in a bright, cool room without watering. From spring to autumn, water it thoroughly, but only after the substrate has completely dried out, preferably from below, as the spines and wool retain water. During the growing season, it is worth using a cactus fertiliser with a low nitrogen content and higher levels of phosphorus and potassium.

Ornamental use

Thanks to its small size and white covering, Mammillaria albilanata is ideal for a windowsill, arrangements with other succulents and collections of miniature cacti.
